Our NVidia “model numbers” are out of sync. My G84 is a 2007 vintage product according to Wikipedia, where your GF114 shows up as a 2011 product. GeForce 8/G80 as referred to in the Phoronix article is 2006 product according to Wikipedia.
My GT218 (GeForce 210), from 2010, closer in age to yours, also works with modesetting:

AMD and NVidia names, model numbers and series are a vexing mess. This is a reason for asking for inxi -Gxx, which provides PCI ID numbers to help with identification.
