I know you did not ask, but for modems that are known to work with openSUSE, take a look here at this openSUSE hardware compatibility list for modems: HCL/Modems - openSUSE hardware compatibility
Unfortunately that list is incomplete, in part because most openSUSE users who get their hardware working, do not take the time to update lists such as that.
For modems to definitely avoid, take a look at the Linux hardware incompatibility list: Linux Modem Incompatibility
I use a USR internal modem that supports both Windows and Linux just fine. It’s the Model USR5610C and its an actual hardware modem, so it works without drivers.

With an RS232 attached external modem you’d be on the safe side.
Internal ones are trickier to sort. Obviously anything calling itself
“WinModem” should be avoided. Generally, anything that doesn’t have a
real modem chip on it is bad, because that means modulation/demodulation
is done in software, which - you guessed it - will typically only exist
for Windows-of-the-Day.
