Missing wlan0 / Broadcom 4313 issue solved

I have a notebook for work that I’m dual booting with Win7/OpenSuse12.3. I had an issue with getting the system to recognize wlan0 even though it showed that I had the bcm4313 firmware loaded. After exhausting myself with endless attempts to get wlan0 to show, I finally ran across a little gem of advice in these wireless forums. I’m sorry I don’t remember who’s post it was in, but they suggested installing KERNEL-FIRMWARE. I thought I’d already done that, but I went into the software management in Yast and did a quick search for kernel-firmware and found that it was available to be installed. I installed that and rebooted my system. Bammo! I now have wireless and was able to configure with knetworkmanager easily. So thank you to the person that shared that advice.

Two rules to remember:

If you are using brcmsmac as the driver for your Broadcom device, then
kernel-firmware MUST be installed.

If you are using b43 as the driver for your Broadcom device, then you MUST run
the install_bcm43xx_firmware script.

And thank you also lwfinger for all of your info in these wireless posts.

How is it possible to use b43 with Broadcom 4313 when it is stated here that this wifi card is not supported?

Do you suppose the wiki is out of date?

By wiki do you mean opensuse wiki? I don’t know what is out of date and who is wrong, I’ve never even tried to use b43 on my broadcom 4313 because on the former mentioned site it is said to be unsupported.

Not an openSUSE (notice spelling) wiki, but the Drivers/b43 page that you
referenced. The guy doing the code writing has been too busy to note that b43
now recognizes BCM4313.
