I am trying to configure my ATI HD 4650 graphics card using the hard way for my opensuse 11.1, KDE4.3. Kernel - 2.6.31-44-pae . I have generated the rpm package successfully but when I go to run level 3 and try to install that rpm file it gives me error:
Preparing... ##################################################

Package "kernel-source" needs to be installed by YaST2 first!

Building/installation of fglrx kernel module failed! Try again
by calling "/usr/bin/fglrx-kernel-build.sh" manually.

configuration details when using SaX2.

So tried executing the script “/usr/bin/fglrx-kernel-build.sh” but it is not on my system…
# ls -l /usr/bin/fglrx-kernel-build.sh
ls: cannot access /usr/bin/fglrx-kernel-build.sh: No such file or directory
I tried searching Yast and web to find from where I can get this script but could not…
Can anyone please let me know from where I can get this script?
Thanks in advance
As you can see from the messages on your screen, you will have to install the package kernel-source first using yast! After you installed the source, installation of the fglrx driver should work. It needs the kernel-source to be able to compile the fglrx kernel-module during the installation.
You’re most welcome BUT to keep things simple i’d recommend using the 2.6.27 kernel and 9.9 ati drivers version since they support openSUSE 11.1 by now
I guess openSUSE 11.2 will be supported in about a year rotfl!
Actually, I updated my kernel in sheer desperation also. I got a USB modem which was recognized as a storage device in kernel 2.6.27 and I had to perform a lot of steps to get that working as a Modem… (You can see this thread: How to configure USB modem in opensuse 11.1 - openSUSE Forums)
As of now I am happy with the new kernel, the only thing is that I will miss the awesome graphic effects in Linux(Desktop cube, cover switcher, etc, etc…) but that is not a show stopper for me.
So I will just see when ATI thinks that they should support the new Kernel…
BTW isn’t it ironical that AMD is one of the sponsors of openSUSE and it takes them one full year to support an OS which they are sponsoring rotfl!.. huh…
Yeah, that is pretty pathetic i would say BUT they made a great move of open sourcing their drivers (maybe more like releasing the documentation), as for now i think that ATI is better if it goes for the bang and the bang for the buck.
ATI already has the smallest chip sizes (32nm i guess) while nVidia has lots of problems with that.
ATI will win this war, not today, not in a year but eventually they will win.
If i wouldn’t buy nVidia earlier i would go for ATI this time (since i stopped playing games some time ago).
