Missing packages when following Multimedia Guide for Tumbleweed

Hi,

when I follow the Multimedia Guide for Tumbleweed from the thread, I get errors about some missing packages (qstreamer-plugins-qt5 and ffmpeg-3). I’ve taken care to allow package switching from OpenSUSE to Packman and applied the system package repository change in YAST, but did I miss something?

sudo zypper install -f libxine2-codecs ffmpeg-3 dvdauthor gstreamer-plugins-bad gstreamer-plugins-bad-orig-addon gstreamer-plugins-base gstreamer-plugins-good gstreamer-plugins-good-extra gstreamer-plugins-libav gstreamer-plugins-qt5 gstreamer-plugins-ugly gstreamer-plugins-ugly-orig-addon vlc smplayer x264 x265 vlc-codecs vlc-codec-gstreamer ogmtools libavcodec58

Hello and welcome to the openSUSE forums.

To begin with your last remark:

(I would have asked this in a comment under the thread directly, but unfortunately the discussion there is closed.)

What do you think is more effective, a new thread with a new telling title that is shown prominently in the list of fresh threads, or a post at the end of a thread that no member that has her/his multi-media already running for years (and those are the ones you need) will anymore look at?

Personaly the only thing I do after a fresh installation or an upgrade is the Vendor Switch to Packman. Maybe I repeat that after I have installed a new mediaplayer or the like. I never had any problems in using multi-media.

So, again my personal opinion, is that after doing the Vendor Switch, you are done. Whenever you encounter any problem in the multi-media area, do the Switch again so that you can then report with 1000% certainty that it is done and come here for help.

On the other hand you get a new thread every time someone thinks they have a new problem. I’m not really partial, either is fine with me.

Please bear with me, I may or may not be stupid, but I’m certainly new to OpenSUSE. So I did the vendor switch following the recommended procedure and am receiving error messages doing it. I just did it again and am still seeing them. That’s why I’m here.

You hit the risk of outdated instructions. Packman now has ffmpeg-4 . My practice is to install the vlc-codecs ( reasoning is that VLC plays any multimedia ), and ffmpeg-4 ( pulls in a lot of codec related packages ).

Thank you. I’ve now done ‘sudo zypper install -f ffmpeg-4’ and it works. As for the ‘gstreamer-plugins-qt5’ package, is that also outdated?

Also what would be the best way to update the instructions, send a message to the topic starter?
