First of all your openSUSE version is…
probably issue is proprietary codecs and that for legal/licensing reasons they are not supplied/enabled in openSuse but if you use Packman’s version and their k3b-codecs rpm all should be fine PackMan :: Informationen zum Paket k3b
I fixed this on my machine just now using these steps… Noting that I am using SUSE 11.4 w/KDE 64-bit :
If you can locate libmad.so and know that it was produced/built to match your machine environment fully… skip to step #3… and of course if you’re not 64-bit you may need to play a bit to figure on which lib directory k3b will be looking in… as that seemed to be my problem
(0) ensure that you have the development tools like gcc/g++/etc. first so that you can compile (SKIP to #3, IF YOU ALREADY HAVE LIBMAD.SO)
(1) download libmad source-code from its author
(2) compile it and make install ( i did not have problems doing this )
(3) cd /usr/lib64/kde4
(4) cp /usr/lib64/libmad.so . <---- in case you can’t see it, that’s a ‘.’ dot for current directory
NOTES:
I used to sit around all day long trying to make computers which weren’t meant to talk to each other start talking way back in the BBS days… But, I have to say that I expected more from Linux. After all of these years, I do realize that there is some legal issue with the mp3 codec, but most of the advice I tried for the past few hours led me absolutely nowhere. I sincerely hope that my little snippit does not disappoint (obviously lib64/ directory would be wherever you are able to locate your libmad.so as properly built for your machine or downloaded for your particular environment). I’m sorta horrified that some product in it’s ELEVENTH version, while “free,” is sort of brain-fragged. No professional with a busy schedule would have time for this sort of ****, and that’s one of the main reasons corporations aren’t jumping on board with linux as fast as I wish they might.
And, YES, I did try what the above persons had instructed. Those things did NOT work for me.
GRUMBLE
(anyone know how to get VLC to work straight-away? Upgrading to 11.4 broke it and after DAYS AND DAYS of messing around I can’t get it to work)

Most likely something went wrong during that. I, as many others, have no problem using K3B for encoding tasks when using the mentioned package.

By the way: ‘make install’ is generally a very bad advice since it ignores the package management.

I suspect you have the Videolan-Repository activated; it’s known to cause trouble when being used with the PackMan-repository. If so, deactivate Videolan and switch their packages to PackMan (they do offer VLC as well). VLC works fine here.
Edit: this is pretty much a technical forum and therefore not appropriate for rants and the like. If you are not satisfied with openSUSE, well… most of us couldn’t care less, really. Cussing within this forum is wasted energy.
