missing file

trying to install a pkg. and it is needing libcrypto.so.0.9.8 and cannot seem to either locate it or to install it.
not sure of the repository needed.
help?
Larry

libcrypto.so.0.9.8 appears to be in the libopenssl0_9_8 package for openSUSE 11.4. Just install it like this. Make sure you become root (by doing su - first):

zypper in libopenssl0_9_8

And Larry, the above response is only valid when you use openSUSE 11.4, which you did not tell. You better give such information out of yourself when you ask something next time. Sometimes people get tired of asking for obvious info like that and give solutions for some level and/or some desktop, which may leed to endless talking about different things.

Also not saying “trying to install a pkg.”, but saying “I try to install the package suchandsuch from the repo soandso” might illuminate your case immensely.

Except Terminal && commands you can install your library here RPM Search

Except of terminal you can find your library here RPM Search libcrypto.so.0.9.8()(64bit)

Yes. And normally, if you try to install a package from the repo and you get such an error, it means a dependencies bug in the package.

Thank all of you for the tips and help. yes it was 11.4 of Suse.

Hi. I am looking for the same thing. I tried the suggestion here but the terminal said i have that verision of openssl installed alreasdy. I’m using OpeneSUSE 11.4. I did try downloading the openssl rpm and opening it to try and place the file manually but i tried to open it with ark. It would not open and if there is another way to open and browse and place files from the rpm i don’t know how to do it. Is there any way?

It’s rather unlikely that you will solve the problem by doing so - except in very rare cases and if you know exactly what you are doing and why.

There are several ways. The easiest one is probably to use the KDE based file browser krusader, which can handle rpms as directories - so you can easily copy files out of them. But again, it’s not the way to solve a dependency problem - and it probably won’t.

Install the right package from the right repo.

I did try installing it but it said i already had it and would not do anything. I thought i stated that in my op. If placing the lib manually won’t work then do you have any suggestions?

You said nothing about the package which failed to install (I’m not speaking about openssl). Neither did @shipinomore actually. All we know is that an ‘unknown’ package might have a dependency problem with openssl according to you - which I can already tell is a wrong assumption because the package openssl doesn’t include any library. The library @shipinomore was missing (libcrypto.so.0.9.8) is in the package libopenssl0_9_8-32bit-0.9.8m-5.2.x86_64. Install this package if that’s the library you need. Otherwise provide more details about the problem. Which package are you trying to install? From where?

I am trying to install Kobo ereader desktop software converted by alien from .deb to .rpm … I went to install the rpm and it said it needed libcrypto.so.0.8.9 … I found that on 11.4 it is in libopenssl so i attempted to install it via the terminal…not realizing that it was already installed…terminal told me same version already installed, nothing to do…so i downloaded it from prmsearch thinking that maybe i could open the rpm and place it manually…i am not on a 64 bit system…Now…the original ereader package is from mobileread.com…Now i understand i am not as smart as you or else i would not be here but you don’t need to be condescending…If you needed more details you could have said so to begin with…I was not assuming that the dependancie problem was with openssl…all i knew was that the ereader package said it needed libcrypto.so.0.8.9 …I would like to know how to acquire libcrypto.so.0.8.9 … if you are going to help me do you still require any more information?

It is the package libopenssl0_9_8 which you need, it is not identical with libopenssl and can be installed in parallel.

But that was already mentioned in post #2, so I do not really understand what your problem is now.

You don’t.

You use the existing libcrypto.so.0.9.8 or the compat version
libcrypto.so.0.9.7. Don’t try to substitute the system version with an
older version.

Then, get a kobo version really prepared for openSUSE.

Notice he wants “libcrypto.so.0.8.9”. Thats 8_9, not 9_8.

The alienated debian package for it shows definitely that it requires
libssl.so.0.9.8 and libcrypto.so.0.9.8, hence my answer. I did not notice
the typo in the the post by Angelbeast.
