Misplaced desktop

I seem to have misplaced my desktop.

When I log in, all the desktop icons, background, etc., that I used to have are no longer there. I just get a nice blue background and the tool bar at the bottom of the screen.

I don’t remember doing anything overt to make this happen.

The last thing I remember doing before this happened was I was trying to update a bunch of GNOME software via YaST. I was never able to get the update to run due to complaints about libgnomekbdui.so(1). At some point, YaST crashed out.

I’m running 10.3 on a Dell Vostro 1400.I’d appreciate any help someone could toss my way.

A bit more info. Some of the icons on the tool bar work (e.g., open office) and some don’t (e.g. Nautilas file browser). I also tried starting the Nautilas file browser from the Applications menu. That didn’t work either.

I’m beginning to suspect my gnome installation is hosed but I don’t have a clue where to start looking to fix the problem.
