misleading/unhelpful error message

just now, was signed in in firefox trying to see a message i just posted to
general chit chat…and, could not…decided to see if the same problem occurred
in Konqueror…tried to log in and it returned:

“Login failed. Please try again.
Please Note: repeated failed login attempts may cause this account to reject
subsequent logins for up to one hour”

ok, so (light bulb turns on) i can’t be logged in TWICE…shouldn’t it say:

Login failed. Reason: Already logged in. Please don’t try to log in again
because blah blah…

No problem… But the forum uses session cookies to log you in… and
since Konqueror and Firefox don’t share cookies, the forum doesn’t know
you’re in twice or not. (Just tested that with Firefox from saturn, Firefox
from neptune, and Konqueror from neptune… logged in with each, no conflicts)

(computer names… not the planets themselves!)

With the greatest of respect… I ever so humbly submit the faintest of
possible happenings, the very most unthinkable occurrence, and with fear
for my well-being… that the great and venerable DenverD has ever so quite
possibly perhaps maybe mistyped his password? {Cringe!!}

and cringe you should!! bigtime!

‘cause, as soon as i logged out in Firefox, i clicked on the still open
Konqueror page’s login button, which was sittin’ there waiting for me…the
password having already been filled in by kdewallet (a smooth invention for gray
haired neurons)…and, when i did i was immediately granted access…

me make a MISTEAK?
Knot a chance…

Far as I know, there’s nothing to prevent multiple simultaneous logins
with Novell Login - I use multiple machines during the day and frequently
am logged in from more than one machine.

The message you got is what typically is presented when you mistype your
password.

try this:

  1. connect as normal to http://forums.opensuse.org using thunderbird
    – click on the ‘Login’ link in the upper right
    – at the Novell Account login page, my thunderbird automatically
fills in the username/password blocks–so once connected it takes
just a click on the little “->login” button to get back to the forum
signed in, with the ‘Login’ in the upper right changed to ‘Logout’

  2. leave that page open and logged in, we will return to it…

  3. open konqueror and go to to http://forums.opensuse.org
    – click on the ‘Login’ link in the upper right
    – provide password to kdewallet (if you use that) OR CAREFULLY
type in username/password and then click on the little “->login”
    button under those fields
    – note the can not log in error (“Login failed. Please try again.”)
    – note that the username/password blocks of konqueror REMAINS
though the error is thrown…do NOT touch it…we will return to this page

  4. go back to thunderbird, click on ‘Logout’ in the upper right of
    forum screen
    – see the page change to “You are now logged out of openSUSE”
    – but do not disturb the page (we will come back to it)

  5. back to konqueror, without touching the username/password which
was rejected in the above step in konqueror, click on the little
“->login” button below the username/password fields
    – watch it now ACCEPT the previously entered username/password and
return you to the forum, and note ‘Login’ has changes to ‘Logout’

proving it is impossible to be logged in twice (apparently)…however:

  1. back to thunderbird still showing you logged out…
    – in the sentence “Thanks for using openSUSE! To get to the Login
page click here.” click to attempt to login while still logged in
    with konqueror…
    – again thunderbird fills the username/password blocks and
clicking on the little “->login” button results in: “Loggin successful”

note you are now logged in in both konqueror and firefox: proving it
IS possible to be logged in twice…

SOso, why is it impossible to log in FIRST in firefox and THEN in
nqueror…but it is possible to log in first in konqueror and then in
firefox???

strangely

Interesting behaviour. The cookies must somehow be treated differently.

I’m not sure I understand why you posted this - because it just confirms
what I said…

reread it…there IS a problem somewhere because it is impossible to
login with konqueror while logged in in firefox…

the opposite is not the case.

perhaps the problem is with firefox…i do not know…

well, so much for the no-doubt-about-it, absolute need to require a
novell login (and the mandatory re-login after one hour) which is
‘needed’ to control web access and therefore spam…

sigh.

Did anyone else see the drive-by ‘bring-your-own-problem-and-solve-it’ guy in
the programming forum? Pappabammawhammabangbang or something? What was all
that about? Sure am glad he got it fixed… but does anyone know what the
problem WAS?!? {Shrug} oh well.
