Mirror to SmartTV

Hey guys, I’m wondering if there’s a way to mirror/stream my laptop to my Samsung SmartTV. It is an older model Samsung TV but has wifi, and i believe the application it uses for streaming is AllCast.
Or even if it’s possible to stream directly from my Bell cable box? It is also connected to the network and seems there might be a chance of that seeing my computer?

I do not have a Chromecast or anything of that sort.

Yes I do have HDMI cords, I’m just looking for alternatives.

I used to use ps3mediaserver to stream videos etc. but I can’t get that working either and I’m wondering if there is something that will more mirror my entire pc.

I’ve used Rygel for streaming but it’s not ideal.

I don’t have a remote for my TV at the moment so I might be limited to what settings I can access just with the one button on the TV. Which I also wonder is there any wifi remote type program like there are on Smartphones?

A couple of projects that a quick search turned up…

YMMV

My machine runs minidlna on Tumbleweed. A Panasonic Smart TV connects to it via Wi-Fi without any problems.

Yes, that’s a good way to stream media, but the OP describes wanting to cast the desktop (I assume for web-based media delivery on the laptop?)

Stumbled across this interesting Mint thread.

Amongst various options discussed there was MiracleCast. It looks interesting…

The MiracleCast project provides software to connect external monitors to your system via Wi-Fi. It is compatible to the Wifi-Display specification also known as Miracast. MiracleCast implements the Display-Source as well as Display-Sink side.
The Display-Source side allows you to connect external displays to your system and stream local content to the device. A lot of effort is put into making this as easy as connecting external displays via HDMI.
On the other hand, the Display-Sink side allows you to create wifi-capable external displays yourself. You can use it on your embedded devices or even on full desktops to allow other systems to use your device as external display.

When I do a google search “Linux samsung screencast” I get plenty of hits.

Skimming a few of the results,
It looks like you should further narrow your search by the type of connection like direct(TV output like HDMI) or over networking. If a direct connection like HDMI, it looks like a trivial setup, no different than setting up multiple monitors.

If you find a promising solution but can’t quite figure out how to make it work on openSUSE, just post with specific details. If you find a Fedora solution, oftentimes the package names will be similar if not exactly the same as what you’ll find in our repos.

TSU

It is not “the one button”, it is a 4-position joystick with a press button.
So you can do everything with it without a remote control unit.
