probably not enough for KDE or Gnome on openSUSE you may therefore
wanna look at less resource needy options–i’ve not actually run any
of these more than a few minutes, but i hear they might do what you need:
-SliTaz <http://www.slitaz.org/> When it runs, the 25 MB compressed CD
image expands to about 80 MB, so any computer with 128 MB of RAM will
be able to load it fully into memory, ensuring blazing fast program
execution.
-Tiny Core Linux is for those who think Puppy Linux is too heavy. Just
10MB it includes a 2.6 kernel and graphics by the Fast Light Window
Manager. Includes software from the BusyBox bundle. If 10MB is too
much you can go to Micro Core which is under 6 MB.

you only need one swap as you can only run one linux distro at a
time…most say the minimum is double the amount of ram you have (but,
obviously if you have 4GB of RAM you are never likely to need 8GB of
swap…

right now my / has about 8 GB in use (of 20 available) i usually
recommend 20 because all it takes is not noticing a runaway log or a
huge temp cache to fill up / and wreck a lot (note: no *nix takes a
full disk gracefully)

is this a trick question??
the difference is one partition is encrypted and the other is
not…(do i win?)

of course…i have (i think) four or five installed, at least…

during install you can select specific software to install or not…go
to http://tinyurl.com/y9qphnl and click on “view pdf” in the upper
right and you can preview the install process…if you scroll down to
page 3, in the upper right corner is the “Installation Settings”
screen…at that step you can click on “Change” and it will open up a
window where you pick and choose desktops, K-apps, G-apps and even
no-applications…just get the basic KDE and Gnome “Base System” all
those K or G programs are in the "Desktop Environment (all or most, i
think)

yes, but i’m pretty sure you are gonna wish you had more horsepower to
drive them…
expect it to slow…very slow, if it will even boot…i mean,
you are installing a system more capable than the latest from
Redmond…what do they expect to use? 2GB of RAM is what many of the
machines on the retail shelves have…i’m running in 1 GB and it is
FAST!! wouldn’t wanna try 256, see page one of that install guide for
the line where it says: “System Requirements - 512 MB phusical RAM (1
GB recommended)”
