Mini display port not functioning (NVIDIA)

I have two external displays, one that I connect via HDMI, and one that’s connected via mDP (to DP on the monitor). I can’t seem to get the later to connect, by which I mean it does not even show up as an option in the display settings or xrandr/arandr.

  • it is not an issue with the monitor - both monitors work when connected with HMDI.
  • it is not an issue with the cable or the port, when I was on Pop!_OS (ubuntu derivative), it worked with the same hardware.

I’m wondering if it’s an issue with the NVIDIA drivers - I believe the mDP hooks straight into my graphics card (Nvidia GTX 1650).

I followed the SDB article on NVIDIA drivers, and I’ve looked at other issues on the forum related to DisplayPorts, but haven’t found a solution. Some relevant command outputs below:

Your running a hybrid graphics system. That driver for the nvidia card is old, plus it looks like you have not blacklisted the nouveau driver as nothing is running , ‘no driver in use’.

Can you run the command mkinitrd as root user and reboot to see if that helps to blacklist the nouveau driver.

That is unchanged after running mkinitrd - nouveau is still listed, and there’s no line for kernel driver in use.

Would this be something I can configure in Yast? Sorry - this is my first time interacting with GPU drivers. The laptop is from System76, and I’ve only previously run Pop!_OS (the system76 flavor of Ubuntu) which has all of this handling built in. They actually have a menu for running hybrid, built-in only, or Nvidia only.

Oh, I should have mentioned, at one point I tried the G06 driver, and had no screen output as all after a reboot. However, around the same time, I was also messing with display managers, window managers, and the like, so I can’t guarantee that the driver was the problem. I did a rollback and got it working again, but haven’t tried messing with that since. Happy to try to upgrade.

With newer gpu’s you will get better performance with prime render offload, depending on your use case for the nvidia gpu. In openSUSE there is suse-prime, which gives the function as indicated, intel, nvidia or offload.

So what files are are down in /etc/modprobe.d? Does it show a blacklist for nouveau?

Create a /etc/modprobe.d/50-nvidia.conf containing;

blacklist nouveau
options nouveau modeset=0

Then run mkinitrd command again.

What is the contents of /etc/modprobe.d/nvidia-drm-modeset.conf?

I only use nvidia_drm.modeset=1 on my kernel options, nosimplefb=1 should not be needed (you would need to test).

On reboot, run that earlier lspci command again.

I just also upgraded to G06 drivers. They work, and during the installation process I saw similar output to mkinitrd (though I didn’t run it again explicitly), but it didn’t seem to change anything in the lspci output.

I certainly haven’t done anything, but I don’t know. Can I check that from the OS, or do I need to dig through the boot menu?

Yes, you need to reboot to get to the BIOS, I suspect it’s off for some reason.

I couldn’t find anything digging through the BIOS menus that looked super relevant - only thing related to GPU seems to be a performance scaling option (which is enabled). Took a couple of images (attached below), but if you have any suggestions I’m happy to hear them. I combed through all of the menus I think, but I’m not accustomed to looking at these things.

I think I might have enough to go to system76 support with, they’re usually pretty responsive, and if it’s not obvious what should be done, they’d probably want to know about it.

One other observation that I don’t know if it’s relevant, and I can’t reproduce, but:

When I upgraded to the g06 drivers, the first time I rebooted, I had a black screen. But I saw my mouse cursor, which was quite large - it looked like what happened when I had mis-configured leftwm earlier in this saga. Anyway, I decided to try rebooting, and that worked, BUT as the computer was shutting down, there was a brief moment when the Tumbleweed logo appeared on the monitor connected via DP. I’m going to try to re-install the OS, and see if I can get this going before messing with window managers and the like.

OK - update.

  1. I completely re-installed the OS. On first boot, the mDP connection works! I have 2 monitors :tada:
  2. I installed Nvidia driver G06, was greeted by a black screen after reboot. No login window, nothing, not even on main laptop screen.
  3. Did a rollback, everything works again
  4. Installed Nvidia driver G05, rebooted. HDMI connection and built-in monitor work, but mDP does not.
  5. Uninstalled driver G05, rebooted. Still no mDP
  6. Did a rollback, everything works again :sweat:

So, I’m not sure I actually need the Nvidia drivers, but this is pretty irritating (to be clear - blaming nvidia, not openSUSE!)
