Going through migration tool “dry run” requests a necessary regcode. I have no idea what this is.

@tckosvic that’s for SLE/SUSEConnect
Thanks, but where do I get a value for it?

If you want to use SUSE products, you need to register:
So it seems you have choosen to switch to a SUSE product when running the migration tool.
I had no idea of this. How did I do that?
How is this different from previous updates? Can I do a manual as I have for decades?
thanks, tom kosvic
I do see the “suse enterprise sp 16” option in migration tool. I thought that meant leap 16. I was in error. I mis-interpretated the options. I see leap 16 at the bottom of the list.
my apologies
thanks, tom kosvic
I think they want to spy on you just like Apple and Microsoft do; what other purpose could there be for mandatory registration?
This is one of the worst reasons why I will probably be saying goodbye to OpenSUSE now, after having been involved pretty much nearly from the beginning.
The other reason why is it become more and more buggy and unstable at least since 15.6 even after buying new Laptop. The stability was the main reason I preferred it all the time, but now it’s gone, and the furst look at Leap 16 doesn’t give me hope of returning the old quality.
This is what me made only sad.

When you would have read the posts in the thread above, you now would know that the OP made a mistake. He now redressed that and went for strictly openSUSE, which resulted in not being asked for a registration any more. Thus your rant is loose.
I’m really glad to hear I was so wrong and I sincerely apologize for my assumption.
I only tried installing Leap 16 once and was very frustrated with the new installation app. I was hoping to find a better alternative using the migration tool, but then this registration prompt appeared – and that was the end of it for me.
I have to admit I didn’t pursue it any further after that.
Dieter
This is an invent.
That means that you told the migration tool you were migrating to SLE 16, not Leap 16. Leap does not require a registration code, but SLE does.
The source code is available for anyone to see the logic:
Line 278 is where the “case” statement starts, and it very clearly states that the case is for SLE being selected. The term regcode (as searched using github) appears nowhere else in the source code other than in SLE-related parts of the migration tool.
Which makes sense, because SLE requires registration, as it is a commercial product, requiring a subscription.
I find it is generally better to not assume bad intent, but instead to ask about it.
It does not really require a registration to install (from the offline/local repository), but it requires a registration to access online repositories from SUSE. opensuse-migration-tool does not support local repositories.
Yes, that is technically correct; you can install SLE from media without a registration code. But for production use (and for the migration tool, as you note), the registration code is required for access to the online repos.
But as we are talking about the migration tool, which explicitly requires it, that particular edge case is not applicable nor relevant.
