Hello.
I have installed suse 10.2 in a text mode. Now i upgrade it up to 11.0. But i want to use the Gnome GUI. How can i do it?
boot the system
at prompt - login as user - then type:
startx
but this will only work if you have X setup properly
If it fails. Report back with details of your PC and graphics
would it not be simpler to do a clean install of suse 11 instead of upgrading from 10.2 to 11. Use the DVD install and select Gnome and let the installer format your root but not your home ?

Make one of the drop-downs that probably reads ‘Search’ instead read
‘Patterns’ and then check the option for Gnome. Wait for a while as it
installs. Once done you should be able to just ‘init 5’ to get to
runlevel five and an OS with a hard outside but a GUI inside.
Good luck.

Thanks.
After i have upgraded 10.2 to 10.3 (from DVD) and from 10.3 to 11.0 (from DVD too) i have run gnome via “startx”, but with fvwm2 only. I could not install another windows manager.
And after i have upgraded 10.3 to 11.0, my mouse has failed and grub’s boot menu has set up to boot from floppy as default.
Try to do what ab @ novell . com said - use yast ncurses interface to select the GNOME patterns.
You do not have gnome packages installed and I guess that startx fails to the only available (or the default) wm which is set-up in the system-wide xinitrc.
Cheers.

You might find it easier to do a New install of OS11
format root (/)
keep /home
Or try from root
zypper in gnome*
I cannot make new installation. It is an operating server with a lot of additional software.
I have reinstalled gnome packages from yast and no results again. Loading stops at the run level 3.
How can i make the following:
“Once done you should be able to just ‘init 5’ to get to
runlevel five and an OS with a hard outside but a GUI inside.”
From what you are asking I would **strongly **suggest you to get some time to read about your operating system and/or more about linux before doing updates / upgrades.
You are saying that you are trying to do this on a “operating server” - if you do mess it badly that “lot of software” won’t be available and you will spend lots of time trying to fix it.
Have a look for start here for runlevels, what are they and how to switch between them.
Good luck and happy reding.
