Migrating OS and Data from 12.1 32-bit to 12.2 64-bit

Very soon I will migrate from openSUSE 12.1 32-bit to 12.2 64-bit. rotfl!

For security reasons, often I export my data to an external disk using rsync. All the disks are of type Ext4.

My question: I don’t know which proprieties must have the directories/files which are saved on the external disk to be used by the new ‘owner’ of the new openSUSE.

Use the 64bit DVD (or USB created from it) to install. For the reasons below, which will also answer your questions:

  1. When you see "Automatic configuration, uncheck it.
  2. When arriving at the partitioning part of the installer, you’ll see “Import partitions”. This will import your current partitioning scheme, where it will suggest to format “/”, but leave “/home” (if on a separate partition) and others untouched.
  3. At first user creation, the DVD install allows you to click “Details” and check a checkbox to import users (and their credentials) from a previous install.

Basically, what you do when following these two suggestions, is do no more than replacing the OS + Software and leave everything else untouched. This means that all your personal settings, like desktop appearance, email, docs will be available after install.

Mind, this only works if /home is on it’s own partition. And it’s been like this for ages.

I used one or two days to save data and mails
before the update from openSUSE 12.1 36-bit to 12.2 64-bit.

All the measures where useless.
Everything happened simple and clear.
