Migrating from Leap 42.1 to Tumbleweed

What is the best way to migrate from Leap 42.1 Xfce 64 bit to Tumbleweed?

Thanks in advance for your suggestions or pointing me to the appropriate documentation.

I installed Tumbleweed direct some time back and have just maintained it since. I have not installed Tumbleweed direct from LEAP.

BUT if it were me, using this wiki (https://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Tumbleweed_upgrade) as guidance, what I would do if I had LEAP installed would be the following:

  • backup everything that is important to an external USB (or other) device
  • boot to LEAP, launch YaST >> Software Repositories and remove every repository for LEAP and add all the new Tumbleweed repositories. Once can also do this from command line as noted here: https://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Tumbleweed_upgrade#Repositories. Since I use Packman heavily, I would also add the Packman Tumbleweed repository, where one can find the Packman repository link here: https://en.opensuse.org/Additional_package_repositories#Packman
  • then I would close YaST and reboot to run level-3 … ie direct to konsole
  • when in konsole log in as a regular user, switch to root permissions, and then run “zypper dup”
  • after install complete, reboot with command “shutdown -r now”.

Agree with oldcpu but a warning. If you hae repos other then the base + packman disable them and deal with their upgrade separately

as to extra repos one be sure they are needed before switching to them and either just get the package you need or do a vendor change depending on what they are. If in doubt ask

Once you have upgraded only use zypper dup --no_allow_vendor_change to update.

Personally I do a new install and reinstall needed apps far less problems then trying to do upgrades across several versions

Thanks to gogalthorp and oldcpu for your opinions and advice, which helped me decide to do a fresh installation.

However, I decided to:

1.- Take advange of Gecko and installed it’s Rolling Edition; with

2.- The LXQt Desktop Environment.

I assume that most openSUSE users are aware that Gecko is a build of openSuSE using the tools openSUSE provides for that purpose.

I have found everything to work as desired (although a couple work-arounds were needed) with one exception.

The number Four does not appear when I type the " 4" key. (I had to copy an existing “4” and paste it in.

This quirk is not related to the keyboard (I tried more than one), and does not occur in other distros.

I may have to post this separately to obtain a response but I’m starting here.

What can cause this and what can be done about it?

(I was born on the 4th but am not taking it personally. The system is working very well except for that foible).

Thanks in advance for your comments.

Keyboard map problem most likely. Maybe try a different desktop???

Does it happen if you run the live version? Have you done a update? TW moves fast so any media may be back a version or two

I have found GeckoLinux to have a few issues, and though I do suggest using the live CD from GeckoLinux to check out differences between desktops, I no longer recommend installing from GeckoLinux.

Among other reasons, the person behind GeckoLinux goes to great lengths to hide their identity and provides no direct support. These are red flags to me, along with some of the customizations, not fully documented, that could be problematic.

My advice?

Re-install the official openSUSE version.
