Migrating from kde 3.x to kden 4.x

Hey i have recently started using kde 4.x. I am trying to find out where are some kde 3.x feautures and how i can use them under kde 4.x

To be more specific:
A)IN kde 3.4 i was using multiple desktops. I still remember that i could see in my taskbar a preview of every virtual desktop and what applications are currently open on each desktop. In kde 4.x these icons are so small so i can’t see any preview so there are not as useful as in previous verions

B)In kde 3.x i could easily create desktop shortcuts by dragging and droping icons. Right click on desktop gives no such an option.

C)What is the plasma dashboard(something like that)? Actually there is a small shortcut in the taskbar that seems to be working like the old one show desktop shortcut.

Thanking you in advance

Hopefully this will help :

I should consider an upgrade to KDE:/KDE4:/STABLE:/ version if you’re not using KDE4.3 already to benefit from bugfixes and future enhancements.

Unfortunately they did not help that much… I still can not create a classic shortcut in the desktop

Right click on the desktop and select “desktop settings”
In the “type” pulldown menu select “folder view”
Now when you drag and drop icons from the menu you can select “link here”
And classic KDE3/ windows style shortcuts are made.

First off did you set the Desktop activity to Folder view??

Right click on screen
select desktop settings
Select Select activity as folder view
on the left select location. it can be the classic Desktop folder or any folder.

Now if you right click on the new folder view you can select “create new” and Link to Application.

You can also add a Folder View widget with the same properties but but just a view into a folder that lives on the “desktop” as a widget

Easy as pie just different form 3.5

Also slightly different naming. What you see is a Activity window what we used to call a Desktop. We place widgets on the Activity Window to set it up like we want. Each activity can be completely different. I have one that is the classic desktop view and another that is my Home directory and another with a Folder View widget that points to a directory that has documents that I need to reference often. This is so much better then Windows or KDE 3.5

Done that… works fine now… but now i cant rotate through virtual desktops using my mouse wheel :frowning: Do you know how i can configure that?

AFAIK that feature is not implemented in KDE4 at this time. And it really is not desktops they are now Activities. You Can still drag windows from one Activity(desktop) to another if you turn that feature on Personal settings - Windows Behavior-Focus-Desktop navigations wraps around. I think

To be honest KDE is inconstant on its naming also. Sometimes referring to Activities and sometimes to Desktop for the same thing. I think they are a bit shy in the introduction to the new paradigm. :stuck_out_tongue:

In oS11.2 KDE4, I simply use scroll wheel on empty part of desktop (not inside viwed folders like Desktop) and it moves between virtual desktops.

No configuration change necessary it was setup by default for new user, and a trifle confusing, as it makes windows disappear on you unexpectedly until you realise why.

You’re right only works if the activity is not a view/desktop. Did not notice that since most of my activities are set to a view.

Funny how practically hidden such features are when you do not expect them!

I discovered it by accident, just wanted to figure out what was happening when my SO was Fire Foxing. She doesn’t have hang of autoscroll, so it happened much more to her.
