Midnight commander, ad hoc access of samba smb shares? apparently not compiled for?

not very familiar with most of this, but I wanted to ad-hoc browse some LAN network with windows shares.

apparently the opensuse 15.6 midnight commander (mc) is not compiled (?) for or with samba smb share access feature, and the menu for the left or right area, doesnt feature the sub-menu or function of smb share (smb link, or also a related? function shell link). this stuff is missing from my midnight commanders menus on this leap 15.6 here. do I need to manually mount my smb share to some path on the directory tree and access it then via mc? thanks.

I don’t use this file manager utility, but AFAIU it only had support for SMBv1 implementation which is now deprecated.

smb not supported anymore:

thanks for the replies, maybe related question then for understanding which layers of the OS, libraries etc do what exactly in this context:

using KDE and dolphin on 15.6 I can simply enter a samba share/path address in an URL style such as:

smb://linux0/share/

and it connects inside dolphin only and asks for credentials etc and starts browsing the share. It doesnt get mounted or so systemwide as far as I have understood. In a similar way I wanted to use mc to access such an address in a very simple way without dealing to mount on the command line or anything.

was only wondering if other applications and tools could maybe make use of this concept, but apparently this is a different way from the way the system mounts a samba share.

still learning a lot. thanks.

Correct, it accesses the samba share using libsmbclient - no mounting required. (It behaves more like ftp.)

There is smb4k if you want to mount a share as a user. That might be sufficient for your needs.

With KDE:Extra repo.

You can use doublecmd. It looks like Windows Total Commander. You need the qt package for KDE to download from the site: Portable packages (most modern distro).
Double Commander has a Directory Hotlist. There you can save the smb://linux0/share/. And then access the windows share with one click. I am using XFCE and I have the Seahorse installed. Seahorse is a GNOME application for managing encryption keys and passwords in the GNOME Keyring. It should be something similar in KDE. This will save the login passwords and users of your Windows machines.
