Hi, folks. Newbie here. Just trying to migrate from Windows 7. Hate microsoft, they’re evil, globalist scum.
But that’s neither here nor there… My microsd will only mount as read only. What can I do?
I tried a hotfix from another thread that said ntfs usb doesn’t mount or something like that, and messed up my disk utility. Now it won’t load properly.
I have reformatted and reloaded the card, then it works. But the next time i eject or safely remove it’s read only again. And yes I’ve “tried turning it off, then turning it back on again!”
That’s just a joke from my favorite TV show “The IT Crowd.”
I truly appreciate any help on this.

some cards have a little slide to make it read only…does yours?
(usually has a lock open icon on one end of the slide and lock closed on
the other)
you say it only mounts as read only…tell us what you mean, like you
stick it in the SD slot and then what do you see on the screen? do you
see a popup which offers several options of what to do with the newly
inserted device? or what?
and, you select which option and then what happens? what do you see?
then using what tool (konqueror, dolphin, mc, cli, nautilus, etc) do you
see “read only” and where and how is that info displayed?
> I tried a hotfix from another thread that said ntfs usb doesn’t mount
wait! is it an SD card that stick into an SD slot or is it a USB device?
i ask because trying to fix an SD card problem with a USB fix is
probably not gonna work so well…

or something like that is not specific enough to help you…

what “disk utility” are you speaking of?
CAUTION: you say you are a newbie so i caution you that much of the
procedures you used with a Windows system will not work here…in some
cases doing exactly what would have worked there will BREAK your stuff
here…

what file system did you reform to? using what tool?
> But the next time i eject or safely remove it’s read only again.
again, tell us in what tool and what series of events leads you to that
conclusion…
and, always tell what operating system and version are you using…and,
what desktop environment and version…

What openSUSE version are you using? What desktop?

What disk utility?

How exactly did you reformat it? What tool and what filesystem?

Hey, thanks for the replies… I was on openSUSE 11.4 with gnome desktop. I upgraded to 12.1 and it works now… This was a problem in every other incarnation of Linux I tried. I’ve tried several before settling on openSUSE. I’m glad they fixed it. But I was using nautilus and the reader was not locked. That’s the first obvious thing.
But this is a problem in older ones… I’ve tried ubuntu, linuxmint, centOS, all gnome and mandriva kde I think… all read only.
I was and am using nautilus.
And here’s the thing It loaded normally… I could delete files. But it never cleared the sd card of the space i deleted from it.
If I deleted a 49 mb file, it would still say that 49 mb was being used. It wouldn’ t show the trash file I found out nautilus was creating on the card or empty it.
But, as I said, it works now, of course so I thank you for your help. I am going to install another linux partition with another linux distro… It will probably have that problem and I’ll get help on that distro forum.
Now I’m having graphics problems again and I’ve got to look for help on that on another thread, or start one.
Oh, and it’s Gnome 3, now. I think it was gnome 2 before. So I guess they fixed it.
