I have a motherboard p5bvm-se with 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller.

Microphone does not work in skype!
:frowning: :frowning: :frowning: :frowning:

Please help me…

Play around with the settings in Skype. The hardware and driver work, since Krecord works, so Skype must miss something. See to it that proper device is selected in Skype.

Yes, when you select another device in the settings skype microphone earned. But the sound is very very dirty. When calls are not possible to understand speech. All devices configured skype does not provide clear speech.

I installed Ubuntu on your computer. The microphone works in skype excellent!

use what works for you!

here, Skype ‘just works’ for me…video/audio perfect!!

I want to work only in opensuse.

then stop threatening to use something else…

to me it sounds like you probably are overdriving your mic…turn it
down in KMix or whatever you have there to set audio levels

check to see if you have “mic boost” turned on…if so slide the mic’s
input level WAY down…here with the boost on my mic input is like 2%
if i go over about 5% it gets all ‘dirty’…

palladium

I tested the sound from the microphone with different levels of “mic boost” and “mic”. The sound is very very bad. In Skype I can not hear.

here is a search on this string:
linux 82801H ICH8 “HD Audio” problem
http://tinyurl.com/yee3e6f

i’d say the 215,000 returns with the word “problem” in it probably
means you are not alone!!

but, if you take that same search and add these to it
solved OR solution OR “it works”

you get about 2,000 hits: http://tinyurl.com/ygns5tt
you might wanna look through some of those

Does this kerecord recording give good audio, and the poor quality is only in Skype ?

If krecord gives poor audio quality have you tried arecord? Do you need guidance on testing with arecord?

Is it possible for you to setup your mixer the way you believe it should be setup for your mic, and then with your PC connected to the internet run the diagnostic script:

/usr/sbin/alsa-info.sh

and select the SHARE/UPLOAD option, which will then give you a URL when it is compete. Post here the URL. That will give us insight into your audio setup.

I use search. I got the microphone working in Skype the following actions:

  1. install the drivers from source
  2. records in / etc/modprobe.d/50-sound.conf:

options snd slots = snd-hda-intel
alias char-major-116 snd
alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
alias sound-service-0-0 snd-mixer-oss
alias sound-service-0-1 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-3 snd-pcm-oss
alias sound-service-0-8 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm-oss

  1. reboot
  2. reinstall sound device
  3. reinstall libasound2 and libasound-32bit
  4. reinstall skype
  5. setting the sound levels Kmix

But the microphone works only until reboot.
After rebooting the microphone is not working!
I do not think this is normal!

Microphone and KRecord and gaRecord gives a good, clear sound.
A microphone in Skype offers low, very quiet, “slow” sound. In the test call could not make out the words.

The result of the new version of alsa-info.sh (0.4.59) saved the link:
http://www.alsa-project.org/db/?f=c66ad05f2905db74df34da3ab7a005c59dccf389

(In my system, installed version 0.4.58 alsa-info.sh)

I’m thinking you did not bother to setup your mic before you ran that script and hence the information it provides is misleading?? Am I correct ? In which case, please setup your mic the way you think it should be set up and run again.

The reason I speculate this is because of the following mixer settings:

!!Amixer output

I note you have the mic boost set to zero. That typically will ensure any recorded volume is VERY low and could be a source of a problem. You also have mic capture and playback set to zero in other places, which make me think the mixer simply was not tuned before running the diagnostic script??

Please, can you examine your mixer carefully here ?

I took a test for the mixer settings when the “Microphone and KRecord and gaRecord gives a good, clear sound”.
This mixer settings when I managed to make the microphone work well in Skype:
http://img.extra.by/out.php/i43880_снимок4.jpeg

This information, with other values for the mixer (with the sound from the microphone in Skype completely inaudible):
http://www.alsa-project.org/db/?f=96242ea59def80238a01ec5e471988ee1ea79068

The microphone is connected to the rear panel. If I connect a microphone to the front panel, it does not sound KRecord and gaRecord, for different values of levels mixer.
There is only one microphone.

udavalost under Skype ? apolgogies, I do not understand. Does it work now under Skype ?

Note your boost is still low at 33%

Both of your mic jacks should work. IMHO the reason your front mic does not work is because you have deselected it in your mixer (or it is not wired).

Yes, you’re right. If I choose the mixer input source - front mic, the sound from the microphone appears in KRecord and gaRecord.
But Skype is not sound.
The microphone is connected to the front panel. If I set the microphone level - 100% and front mic boost - 100%, then I hear a very loud noise, but the sound from the microphone in Skype no.

>> Udavalost under Skype? apolgogies, I do not understand. Does it work now under Skype?
mixer settings, when Skype was working perfectly.

If arecord works, then IMHO you need to get someone who knows Skype to help you, as I think you have your Skype misconfigured.

One thing I am curious about. I note this:

!!ALSA Version
!!------------

Driver version: 1.0.22.1
Library version: 1.0.21a
Utilities version: 1.0.21

That 1.0.22.1 driver version is not consistent with this, which you provided:

ssv:~ # rpm -qa '*alsa*'

alsa-devel-1.0.21-3.2.x86_64

alsa-firmware-1.0.20-3.2.noarch

libasound2-1.0.21-3.2.x86_64

So did you rebuild alsa from a tarball. Can you explain what you did there, or is it up to those helping to see this in their crystal balls ? lol! (noting that I unfortunately lost mine in a recent stock market crash … :frowning: ) …

>> Can you explain what you did there
Install skype repository from opensuse. Microphone is not working.
Install skype from skype.com/downloads version for opensuse 11+. Microphone is not working.

I got the microphone working in Skype the following actions:

  1. Download the latest driver (realtek-linux-audiopack-5.14) with Realtek / downloads. Unpacked, cd realtek-linux-audiopack-5.14, cd alsa-driver-1.0.22, read the Readme.txt,./configure - with-cards = hda-intel, make, make install, alsaconf,
alsaconf answered “No supported PnP or PCI card found”
    Run the./snddevices
  2. cd …/alsa-lib-1.0.22,. / configure, make, make install
  3. cd …/alsa-plugins-1.0.22,. / configure, make, make install
  4. cd …/alsa-utils-1.0.22,. / configure, make, make install
  5. records in / etc/modprobe.d/50-sound.conf:
    options snd slots = snd-hda-intel
    alias char-major-116 snd
    alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
    alias sound-service-0-0 snd-mixer-oss
    alias sound-service-0-1 snd-seq-oss
    alias sound-service-0-3 snd-pcm-oss
    alias sound-service-0-8 snd-seq-oss
    alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm-oss
  6. reboot
  7. run skype. skype not loaded
  8. test the sound output. sound does not work
  9. reinstall sound device in YAST
  10. reinstall libasound2 and libasound-32bit
  11. reinstall skype
  12. changed configuration the sound setting and the level of capture in Kmix

Microphone in Skype works great! Good, loud sound.

But the microphone works only until reboot.
After rebooting the microphone is not working!
I do not think this is normal!

ahh … I know nothing about Realtek drivers for audio, other than they have caused many in our membership no end of grief.

Glad to read that.

Unfortunately you are using a driver from Realtek has thrown a massive spanner in the works in terms of my support. In my experience Realtek drivers cause more problems than they solve.

Apologies, but because of the unknown (and IMHO likely problems) introduced by the Realtek driver, I can not help here. Short of suggesting a complete re-install of Linux, to get rid of any effects from the Realtek driver, and starting all over from the beginning without Realtek driver, I can not help.

I installed the drivers from realtek because there never was able to get work the microphone in Skype.

I understand. I am sorry to read of your difficulty and the frustration that must entail.

I do not use Skype myself, but my wife does. She is a BIG winXP fan and uses WinXP about 99% of the time. Last weekend she booted to openSUSE-11.2 Linux and setup Skype in a few minutes (well, ok, less than 1 minute). [she is trying to push me to use Skype and I completely refuse, so she wanted to make a point. She made her point, but I still refuse.] … So clearly it IS possible even for those who do not like Linux.

IMHO rather than install the Realtek drivers, it would have been better to ask for help here prior to installing the Realtek drivers, and then stick with it for a while trying to get help, as opposed to installing the Realtek drivers. I think now you need to ask Realtek for help as these are not drivers supported by Novell/SuSE-GmbH nor by anyone that I know who watches our forum.

Best wishes and good luck.
