Since around the time Packman tried pushing the wrong version of Ffmpeg (not sure if related) my microphone has been making horrible stuttering noises in every application. I use a Shure SM57 plugged into a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 1st generation. So far I have been able to resolve this issue by fiddling with my Audio Mixer/Volume Control settings via the GUI as well as the Rescan Audio Devices feature in Audacity. This fix is inconsistent and I don’t really understand why it works. I would appreciate some help figuring out a permanent fix, as spending 20 minutes trying to fix this problem any time I want to record audio or use voice chat through Discord or a game is very inconvenient and frustrating.
Note: I use direct monitoring through my audio interface and this sounds completely normal and unaffected, and all apps output audio normally. Additionally, when recording audio in Audacity, the cursor moves at exactly half speed, so I think it has to do with bitrate differences between mono and stereo audio? I’m frankly out of my depth. Additionally, in the Volume Control Configuration menu, I’m using the Default profile for my Focusrite Scarlett 2i2, which shows my Input 1 Mic/Inst/Line port as mono and separate from the Input 2 port, but when I use the Direct Scarlett 2i2 profile it combines both ports into a single input with the jittering Input 1 audio primarily in the left channel. Not sure if related.
Example audio for diagnostic purposes:
I’ve found a fix that persisted after the first restart and that was changing the “Latency Compensation” setting in Audacity from 0 to 100ms and then clicking “Rescan Audio Devices.” there was a popping noise in my headphones similar to when my computer powers on and the lights on my interface cut out and came back on. Confusingly, changing the “Latency Compensation” setting BACK to 0ms and restarting did NOT reintroduce the bug, so this is some weird jank beyond my understanding. Hopefully does not come back, will update further if it does.
