Microfocus Network Latency

Don’t know who or how to contact.

I have been using Redhat derivatives for just over 20 years. I have a new computer coming on Thursday and I am very tempted to switch to Tumbleweed which I have been running in a v-machine. I hate Ubuntu. Clear Linux is a bust due to awful package management. But I digress.

The only thing that concerns me with OpenSuse is that Micro Focus is not providing nearly enough bandwidth for downloads and updates which begs the question of how committed they are to this project. I have plenty of connectivity via cable.Nevertheless individuals can experience pockets of poor performance. No clues from traceroute.

Two questions:

  1. Is it me or are others experiencing the same problem?
  2. If it’s not me, who can I complain to?

Thanks for helping a Suse Newbie!

Hi and welcome to the Forum
Microfocus are no longer in the picture, our primary sponsor SUSE are now independent  You likely striking issues with the mirror infrastructure which does have issues at times and being worked on.

What I suggest is finding a mirror and your locale via openSUSE Download Mirrors - Overview and use that rather than download.opensuse.org which is mirrorbrain (https://en.opensuse.org/MirrorBrain) driven.

I usually get pretty good download speeds, usually close to my 200mb/s connection speed. But I suppose that’s not a fair test, because I use “aria2c” to download isos, and that can use several mirrors in parallel to speed things up.

For updates of Tumbleweed, I’m usually seeing around 20mb/s download speed. But it can be slower immediately after a snapshot is published, probably because the mirrors are still updating to the new snapshot.

As Malcolm indicated, this can also depend on your location the mirror to which you are redirected.

Latency depends on your location:

Connection speed is excellent. I always get the maximum download speed. Small zypper dupes take a few seconds, larger ones a few minutes at most.
