Is this an internal or an external mic ? Is it in a docking station? or separate from a docking station?

It is an internal mic.

You could move the boost and capture settings up to 100%. That will give noise and distortion, and then once you hear some recording, you can back off to check the levels.

Its possible that the autoprobe of 1.0.21 of alsa (upon booting) did not work, although from what I have seen its pretty good. If necessary we can try forcing a model option to be applied upon alsa starting, where the list of model options (which can only be applied on at a time) are here from the hd-audio-models.txt file for 1.0.21 of alsa:

In kmix:
‘capture’ has to be enabled and adjusted to the half.
‘Digital’ has to be adjusted to near maximum.
With ‘Internal Mic’ and ‘Internal Mic Boost’ the sound level could be increased but disturbing background noise will be increased too.

The record qualitiy of the internal mic is not outstanding(annoying background noise). Will test it later with an headset.
