merge deb and rpm

Hi
how about making rpm and deb compatible for future releases?
the current situation with many package managers is sick.

You wouldn’t be writing that if you understood the incompatibilities that go beyond mere file formats, to file locations, versions, dependencies, packaging of functionality and so forth between distros and even between RPMs from different versions of the same distro. Let’s just leave it at: not possible in the simplistic way you think.

i heard fedora and suse work towards binary compatibility for rpm. So why should it be more complicated to get this for all distros.
this is overdue folks…>:(

Because its not only difficult on the technical level, but also there’s quite a lot of politics involved between the RPM Vs Deb wars. There are very strong backers of both formats on both sides, and each time such things come up for discussion, the end result is one of “we agree to disagree” and very little, if at all, gets done.

Also, it’s not only a matter of binary compatibility. It’s also a matter of locations (where config files, etc are stored) and distro specific way of doing things

RPM is a packaging standard chosen and endorsed by the Linux Foundation, something the Deb people strongly oppose and disagree with as they argue Deb is better and should be chosen over RPM. In reality, there’s not much “better” in Deb compared to recent RPM and there’s still a lot of bad myth floating around on the web over RPM, which in the past indeed sucked a lot, but now not so much, still the myth is kept alive
