Mencoder DVD -> AVI solution...FWIW

Hi all…not claiming to be an expert by a long shot but a few months ago I went through the pain of trying to nail down a solution to get DVDs ripped through my OpenSUSE system and playable with no further conversion on my Creative Zen. I had problems with A/V sync, until I got the right settings figured out.

I came up with a script that front-ends Mencoder. This works great for my Zen, and should be able to be easily tweaked for many other applications. Here’s the link:

Converting DVD to AVI for portable media players, under Linux

Hope this helps someone who may search in the future…

Thanks, man! By the way, what size files does this thing spit out?

You’re welcome :slight_smile:

Resulting AVI filesize is dependent on a few things: source file size, output screen size, video bitrate and audio bitrate being the most critical.

As an example, the movie Minority Report when I encode it to 320:240 (for my Zen) and using a video bitrate of 512K and audio of 128K (fixed), the resulting AVI is around 672M. The original DVD content was probably around 6.5G
