Have you noticed that memtest that comes with opensuse 12.2 64 bit does not function correctly?
The program, which can be started before installation, is called memtest86+ version 4.20. It often shows RAM errors at test # 7, at about 200 MB. No such thing is observed with memtest of opensuse 12.1 or Ubuntu.
Could be a program error I suppose but it also my uncover a different set of errors. Mem tests write different sets of values and read them back so perhaps a new bit patteren as been used and it shows there is a problem.
The version of memtest86+ is the same (4.20) for opensuse 12.1, opensuse 12.2 and latest Ubuntus. The bit pattern is likely the same, besides the randomly generated patterns.
And the computers whose RAM is identified as defective with opensuse 12.2’s memtest perform flawlessly.
if your boot disk does’t check out ok that may be your problem…
or if the disk check out ok, it is one of three things:
your memory is bad
your memory is occasionally flakey–i’d suggest you (if possible)
remove and reinstall the RAM sticks into different slots (if you have
several)
if the symptoms change (from #7/200mb to some other location/test) i’d
guess either a bad stick or a bad slot…or just contacts that need
cleaning (remove sticks and use a soft pencil eraser to polish the gold
contacts and then NEVER touch them with fingers/skin…
you have found a bug
i would hope someone else would try their 12.2 64 bit install disk to
see if it also reports RAM errors…if not it is almost assuredly a
problem with your machine–check the maker/board manufacturer’s web
site, perhaps there is a new BIOS to repair exactly this problem…
if others can reproduce it it certainly needs to have a bug
submitted…(you can do that now, but i hesitate to suggest you do until
someone else with your hardware can confirm similar findings…)
hmmmm…maybe you could share with us your hardware…
Just tried the 32 bit version and it failed at @44% on two working PCs??? Booted the 12.1 disc and ran memtest on both PCs again, and they passed. Ran a media check on the 12.2 DVD, passed…Yeah, memtest seems to be broken on 12.2
I have tried running memtest both from USB flash drive and from LiveCD.
I have run memtest on about ten (in total) desktop and other computers, from small laptops to dual-processor computers. Almost all of the runs show defective RAM.
I have updated the BIOSes, eased memory settings in BIOS, have run memtest with only one RAM module present, re-shuffled RAM modules, changed other settings in BIOS - same results. Exactly the same: failing on test # 7, at ~200 MB.
In the process, I have found a faulty RAM module on a computer which once malfunctioned. That was at one of earlier tests, and at other MB. So, the memtest of 12.2 is not quite useless.

This problem has been reported brfore. It is in Bugzilla if I remember
right. I used the 12.1 version(same as 12.2 version supossedly) But it
runs.
Yes, the memtest of 12.2 is definitely borked. I went ahead and bumped the priority up on the bug and indicated that it is also present in the final version.
I tossed a stick of memory because of this bug. I wonder how many other working systems are also being marked as defective. This bug is bad enough, it deserves a reissue of the ISOs.

Tell them in the project mail list.

Cheers / Saludos,
Carlos E. R.
(from 11.4 x86_64 “Celadon” (Minas Tirith))
The memtest of opensuse 12.1 can behave similarly. I have a computer, on which memtests of opensuse 12.2 and 12.1 show error on test # 7, but memtest of opensuse 11.4, version 4.10, shows no errors.
Have just come across this thread… possibly a bit late :’(
I started having this issue installing Ubuntu 12.10, and was also having some other issues on the PC. Memtest was failing at about 46/47%, be it with 2x2GB sticks together, or each stick individually, so… ended up buying a new m/b (and RAM - and CPU!) - same issue.
In the meantime, downloaded 12.2, and installed that (on my ‘new’ pc) only to find that I still have the same issue, with all different parts…
I know, I’m an id10t!
If the original PC hadn’t already been having some issues, I would have tested a bit more before jumping!
So it looks like the Ubuntu Memtest has the same issue, also…?
Thanks.

it is a known problem, see:
The pre-installation memory test (memtest) on the openSUSE 12.2 media
got miscompiled. It reports errors in test 7 on good RAM modules. Use
the openSUSE 12.1 media if you need to run memtest.
