I had a chance to install 11.1 - KDE 4.2.3 yesterday. I’ve been using Mandriva 2009.0 and Opensuse 11.0 before this. Now in 11.0 the memory usage for KDE 4.2.3, at boot through htop, came to around 185MB of RAM on my Thinkpad R61 w/ 1GB RAM and Intel Graphics Card. After installing 11.1, I noticed a HUGE memory increase of approx 100MB to 295MB!!
I’ve remove beagle, Mono, disabled Nepomuk/Strigi, extra services like nfs etc etc…tweaked the autostart in /usr/share/autostart, /etc/xdg/autostart and the services in /usr/share/kde4/services/kded…removed alsa-plugin-pulse. Didn’t see any change…maybe a couple of MB here and there…thats all.
Has anyone else noticed the same? This is quite a massive memory increase and far far far more than Mandriva 2009.1 for which the KDE 4.2.3 memory usage comes to a meagre 160MB at startup…heck even the 11.0 had a lesser memory footprint!!
KDE4’s system monitor reports 0.46GiB when Konqueror is running which is not much different from the figures I was getting for KDE3 with Konqueror open.
Thats what I get for 11.0…~ 200MB at boot w/o anything turned on. Now I checked all processes through htop and/or ksysguard. It doesn’t seem like any of the KDE processes is running away with the memory. Would seem to suspect the kernel which is the basic difference between 11.0 and 11.1, the KDE4 & Qt versions are pretty much the same in both.
The last line does it, AFAIK. Are you sure you have the QT45 packages installed (from the Qt repo). These lowered my memory consumption.
And: regarding memory price per GB, isn’t it wiser to add some extra 2GB to your RAM than spending hours on reducing memory consumption? The DOS-days are long-gone
Yes, I have the latest Qt 4.5 packages installed as well. My laptop isn’t exactly a slow poke and I’ve been using KDE4 merrily on 11.0 and Mandriva w/ 1 GB of RAM. I see no reason to add the extra 2 GB just so that I can use 11.1. 1 GB is way to far too much DOS an just right for KDE4, IMO.

Part of the issue is pissing away 200 Meg for just about nothing in
return.
Well, in my case running openSUSE 11.1 (i586) with fully updated KDE 4.3 (4.2.86 (KDE 4.2.86 (KDE 4.3 >= 20090514)) “release 126”) ksysguard shows a memory usage of 297 MB right after boot-up with no application running, none, but ksysguard.
ksysguard shows 126 running processes, none with out of ordinary memory usage.
what is going on?
marco,
Thats pretty much in line with that I’m getting as well. Memory usage reports are usually dismissed by users with the statement that “Get more RAM” or devs by “The Memory Measurement Method is Incorrect”.
I’m back to using Mandriva 2009.0 for the time being. The response from Opensuse devs and community has been rather dismissive so far and none wants to look into why this could be happening. To be honest, I’m rather disappointed with the 11.1 KDE release…maybe time to give GNOME (w/o the Mono poison) a try?
Guess what? After my post above, I noticed that they were a bunch of update available in YaSt>online update. So, I updated all.There was a new ksysguard amongst the updates. I hoped that it will take care of this issue. But, lo and be hold! Now the ksysguard shows 346 MB memory usage under the same conditions.Perhaps the developers will read this thread and may pay attention to this issue, since it is still under development and not finalized yet. Let’s hope so!
