I few days ago I installed some plugins (I can’t remember which exactly) for the media players I have installed, including fluendo.
I now have a flashing red lattice across the screen when ever I play a video file. It doesn’t matter which player I use, VLC, Kaffeine, xine, smplayer, kmplayer, etc. The red lattice flashes a couple of times a second. Audio is fine but the video experience is gone.
Does any one have an idea which plugin could be causing this or am I going to have to remove most if not all of them.
Try turning off desktop effects, in the past with older versions of compiz I had a simular issue to this.
Never know.
But it could easily be one of the gstreamer plugins, as I had issues similar to yours in the past with them as well.
On a side note, if you are running kde42’ you will find setting your update repo to 99 makes for less trouble with dependencies.
Back to topic:
Now open Yast Software Management
Filter by Repo and select Packman
From the ‘Packages’ menu along the top - select Update all in this list Unconditionally
If conflicts arise, choose the change Vendor option
accept
I am carrying out the instructions. I did have to chose the Change Vendor option. There were, however, three errors which didn’t offer me that option. Each error gave me only the option to delete one of 2 or three files. I chose the first file for each since I couldn’t tell what they would be used for.
Your side note mentioned “if you are running kde42’ you will find setting your update repo to 99 makes for less trouble with dependencies.”
How/were exactly do I make this change?
Sorry, I’m going to have to carry with this later tomorrow. I have a very early start.
Thanks for your help so far. I will let you know what the outcome is.
Now open Yast Software Management

I did have a couple of conflicts which, as you suggested, I clicked on “Change Vendor”. There were however 3 that didn’t give me that option. I could only choose to delete one or the other plugin. Which I did.
After that I disabled the repos #5 and #11, according to the list I gave earlier.
When I run Kaffeine now, and play a film I get a blank screen, black, and the film time, bottom right hand side, speeds forward, the indicator moves fast, in time with the timer, from left to right. So no video or audio.
I tried Mplayer, video and audio is there but so is the flashing red lattice.Same with SMPlayer and a couple of others.
Some more inconsistancies in your repo’s though not multi-media.
You have to remove repo #4
Did you change the priority of Update repo from 20 to 99?
Strictly speaking qt44 is not needed.
Also repo #10 12 13: are from OS 11.0?? Why are they there?
Look at Yast Software Management - Filter by repo -
Select ‘System’
Do you see many Red or Blue Packages if you scroll thru the list?
You could try and get them all Black.
Depending on your Internet (You could Update all Unconditionally in System repo filter)
I have removed repo #4.I have just changed the priority to 99.I have left qt44.
Repos #10 12 13 - they were an oversight. I have removed them.
I did as directed. I had some Blues and some Reds. How do I turn the Reds to black. Delete them? There is no “downgrade” option.
I upgraded (rather in the process) the blue ones except for the following:
digikam
digikam-lang
gwenview
kdebase4-session
libakonadi4
These kept putting up conflicts/errors. Each time I chose the option to go with a different vendor, but that didn’t really help. They always came up with some other conflict or error, until the only option I was left with was to delete/not install some file that had been previously needed.
I’ll let you know what happens with the installation.
I thought it might be useful to give you the read out of the zypper command.
| Alias | Name | Enabled | Refresh | Priority | Type | URI | Service
Red packages which have no option to roll back, ie; no radio button is available in the Version Tab. Means either you installed the .rpm manually (an eg would be the Sun Virtual Box .rpm) or the package is defunct either because it is from a repo you have removed or the package has been replaced by another with a different name.
Confused? You should be.
This is what happens if you mess with development stuff and don’t have sufficient knowledge…sorry, but it’s true.
Try a Update all Unconditionally using the system filter from the repos

I just know some people have had issues with Nvidia cards with KDE4 and desktop effects.
But I am not saying thats always the case, as there are many factors to consider.
