Media free network installation of 12.2

I thought I’d try a system upgrade to 12.2, and followed, I think, the instructions to prepare for installation, but zypper update surprised my with the news that it was going for an upgrade. As it was what I wanted in the end, and I thought the process could have been improved since the writing of the instructions I was following, I continued. However, I didn’t get far before grinding to a halt without enough disk space to proceed, the 8 GB I’d thought would be all I could ever need for my system having been consumed, and my GUI having been broken.
Using the command line, I tried the instructions for a media free network installation from kernel and initrd, which had worked for 12.1. When I rebooted, I again failed to fill the first screen, things this time coming to a halt after the drivers had been loaded and the procedure had reached YaST, at the end of a line reading > init.12: udev. I can’t help wondering if that could have anything to do with the warnings about the changes in the pipeline for udev, but have no idea what I can do about it.
If anybody can tell me why I ran out of space, and what I can do about it, I’d be pleased. Similarly, is there anything I can do to overcome the udev hurdle, or is this a bug that I should report?

only 8gig for root or 8gig free in root???

Not knowing what instructions you follow it is hard to say but generally it is recommended to set zypper to first download before install. Thus a lot of space is used up.

You comment “only”, but the advice I found when setting up my partitions was that I didn’t need that much space, and I haven’t seen any sign of running out before. The total in my system partition is 8 gig. I didn’t see any suggestion in the upgrade instructions that it needed a lot of space, so I didn’t check before starting how much was free.
The instructions I was following are at SDB:System upgrade - openSUSE. These only suggest as an afterthought downloading all packages in advance. I didn’t want to risk running out of space, so I followed the initial instruction.
The instructions I followed successfully with 12.1, and tried with 12.2 when I found I had a broken system, are at SDB:Network installation - openSUSE.
Thanks for your comments on the space problem. Now that I have a broken system, I think I need to use the kernel and initrd instructions. Can you tell me how to work round the > init.12: udev problem?

I reported the bug, and Steffen Winterfeldt suggested the workaround of adding hwprobe=-int to the GRUB command for installation. Although the result isn’t perfect, I have succeeded in completing an installation of 12.2.
