HI. In the past I had to add the packman repo to get the codecs. This time around, I was really surprised that all my .MP4, MP3 and other files just play in openSUSE Tumbleweed without adding packman. Its this new? Never experienced this before, but it’s great!
The world goes on. As the restrictions on some codecs are expired, Pckaman stopped supporting them and they are now fully integrated in the standard OSS repo (already for some years). Nevertheless there are still other codecs (also recent ones) that are restricted and for those you still need Packman.
So in my opinion there are two options:
- you can do the switch to Packman for every new install as you did before (for me it is just one of the actions I should do with any installation);
- you can continue without Packman until you stumble into some video that refuses to show and then remember that you should have done the switch.
You decide.
