MC, Midnight Commander file manager takes about 10 minutes to load in the console and in the XConsole. Then it works normally. What is my computer doing for 10 minutes?

Maybe, during those 10 minutes, have a look with ‘top’ from another console. Can you see any activity?
I had the same problem some longer time ago. Adding
alias mc='DISPLAY=;mc'
to ~/.profile lets mc start in almost no time.
