Maybe a virtual question

This is probably going to be my dumb question for the day, but I need to ask anyway.

I have a program that I would normally use on my dual boot Win7/openSuse machine. I hang out on this side about 99.99% of my time, except to go to the other side to print a thing or two. The program is called PhoneTray, and it has been tried unsuccessfully (to my knowledge) with the use of wine.

My question is, can a virtual world be ran on another desktop with winXP and maybe a few small programs.
The last time I messed with anything virtual I could not make anything USB to work. Have they come a long way in solving the usb.

OR OR OR Does anyone know of a PhoneTray type program that works on Linux. That would save me a load of headaches.

Mike, if it’s on the machine from your sig, it should easily run Virtualbox + XP. But, if you want full USB support you’d have to install Oracle’s version from http://virtualbox.org + the extension pack. If you need instructions on that …
Most of us here do not use the Redmond OS, nor the common apps on it. I for one wouldn’t know what phonetray does. I can guess, but I’ve never heard of it. Please elaborate on that, it might very well be that a good replacement is out there already. Or tens of them, which would create another “so much choice” problem :D.

I am being bothered by “Out of area” phone calls, that program allowed me to block not only that call, but any other that I wish. When I switched to Linux, I lost that program.

If your phone calls come in through your Internet connection, then that program
should work perfectly well with a VM running XP. I use such VMs for 2 main
purposes. One is to run a utility to program a universal remote for which there
is no Linux version, and the other is to run a program written for Access 97 on
a computer running 64-bit Windows 7. None of the Office 97 code works on a
64-bit system, OpenOffice does not support the Visual Basic functionality that I
need, and I have no interest in providing any more payments to Redmond. The most
interesting part is that my wife uses that program, and she has little knowledge
of what is happening. All she knows is that when she wants to run that task, she
clicks on a Win 7 desktop icon, and she suddenly is in XP. When she shuts it
down, she is back in Win 7.

This is what is what I am being greeted with when I try to create my XP world
Could not create the VM
This parameter must be a string or Unicode object

Thanks for any help

Use the VB wizard to create the VM.

We might be thinking about different programs. I downloaded the virtualbox from openSuse repository. I was thinking it would be the same, after all it had the same name. But in any case there is no wizard, there is just “NEW”.

And NEW runs the wizard. Fill in the data and it should work. At least it does
for me.

When I select NEW, and choose what the os type, the vm name automatically fills itself in. When I click on the add button I then get that message. I dont see any more options.

I run the rpm directly from Oracle, not the one from openSUSE, but it should not
affect the operation.

When I select a type, the name is left blank. You might try clearing the name
and writing your own name in that box. If that still fails, go to
https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Linux_Downloads and select the openSUSE entry
for your architecture. Although it only mentions 11.4/12.1/12.2, it also applies
to 12.3.

If that still fails, do a screen capture before you press add, and post that image.

In order to post an image, i’m guessing i would have to upload it to something like photobucket. But that’s just me a guessing.

The openSUSE paste site can handle images.

I do not know where that is.

I do not understand what i am looking at.

I am looking at a program that runs on Linux, it looks promising.Network based Caller ID Programs

If you Google “opensuse paste”, the very first hit is the one you want. That
link does the search for you.
