Hi, I am new to Opensuse, this is the first of many distros where my maudio 24/96 doesnt work out of the box. I am using opensuse 11, Gnome version from the DVD, on a amd dual 64 with 2 gig ram.
Strange thing is that I previously installed the KDE 3 and 4 versions and sound worked flawlessly, as KDE 4 gave me so much problems and KDE3 is not my cup of tea I reverted to old friend Gnome (new install).
I have done : alsa-init from a console and then the speakers test which I saw in other post. Strangely there it works, I can hear the lady saying “front left” “front right” et al, but then nothing else has sound. I also installed alsa-utils and have the envy24 mixer but no go.
Any ideas? thany you so much
If the speaker-test works, then you have functional sound in your Gnome.
Can you be specific where your sound does not work?
Don’t forget that openSUSE as packaged by Novell/SuSE-GmbH comes crippled for all proprietary codecs, hence you need to add codecs packaged by 3rd party sources.
I recommend you 1st setup you repositories with ONLY Packman, OSS, NON-OSS, and Main Update per the guidance in this post: Repositories/11.0 - openSUSE-Community
then once that is done, add the following applications (replacing the Novell/openSUSE packaged versions in all cases with the Packman packaged version):
libxine1
xine-ui
smplayer
vlc
w32codec-all
xvid
mad
amarok
You can tell the packman packaged version by the “pm” in the rpm file name. With your repositories setup, the dependencies should be handled automatically for you. Then be certain to select the “xine” sound engine in applications such as amarok.
Also note if you have “special effects” specified on your desktop, you may need to select the “x11” video mode for your various video players. If you have not setup “special effects” then likely “xv” will work much better.
yes, that did it, before reading your answer I went to community.org where I downloaded codecs from Packman repo, now xmms work, amarok as well, and envy24 shows the vol leds working, I guess everything will fall in its place now. No, I have not effects on my set, although I have an ATI card acceleration in Linux is a disaster, at least ATIwise so I pass with that one, I could care less. No 3d games neither, so…guess I could watch video on the xv driver, should try.
Thank you very much for helping.
OK so I went on installing some packages you suggested (smplayer, xine-ui) to complete the restricted codecs parafernalia. I guess I have a full multimedia system now.
Thanxs again.
