I concur - the lowest common denominator of both interfaces shouldn’t be
the driving/deciding factor - as long as that functionality doesn’t break
the interface. I can’t see how this would.

When you view a message, there is a tiny little link on the right side of
the tags box that will let you edit them.

I believe you need to be logged in, your screenshots don’t show that you
are logged in.

I agree, just pointing out that no solution is going to catch all solved
posts 100% of the time.

Just like you said Jim, some people will take the time to mark a message
solved others will not, some will come on the site and search for solved
posts and then there are the others who either do not know that the feature
is there and will just search normally or there are the posters who do not
search at all and just jump in ( not to mention the ones who do not even
read the stickies ), so add the nntp users and I think you will find that
marking posts solved is only going to help/satisfy a lesser number of
people.

@baskitcaise
You forgot to mention it won’t work if there is an “r” in the month.

where is that “tags box” you mention?

Down near the bottom right about the quick reply box but I believe you do have to be logged in to see it: ImageShack - Best place for all of your image hosting and image sharing needs

@kgroneman
That whole bar with Tags/none on left and Edit tags on right, doesn’t show on mine around the Quick Reply box when logged in.

Perhaps you have special powers, and the OP may be able to edit tags (guess), but on this thread I don’t get the edit tags bar.

Your correct consused I just checked the only root thread I’ve got I can add/edit tags to it but I guess others can’t.

As for all this minority use malarkey from the nttp users pfft… I wonder whether they realise they same could be said…

Ah I knew I was missing something, however I have noticed this keyboard did
seem to lack a lot of punctuation in that post.

Repeat to myself, do not post whilst eating eating.

“,” just a coupe of spare commas please fell free to distribute randomly
around said article to create a semblance of readability.

Pfft, not all NNTP users are saying “this is no use to us” or “we
wouldn’t use it” or even “we can’t use it”. Most just don’t care because
it’s all about the content.

So don’t lump us all together.

Ditto,

And I think you will find that the nntp users are mostly made up of the
people helping having been round before web front-ends existed and have no
use for these here newfangled “button” things anyway.

Hi
Ditto ditto

Besides just more html code some poor dialup user needs to download to
search out for a problem… <ducking for cover>

I find it absurd the ones banging about it being pointless are the nttp users who rightly pointed out it will not affect them one way or the other(Shrug)… You decide read this thread back… Bit like the pointless kde gnome one going on at the mailing lists. If they visited the forum they would probably realise the users they keep harking on about actually don’t give 2 hoots.

To be fair it is highly unlikely ever to be implemented unless the work load was excessive for the moderation team. Why? no one likes mods to official software…

Overall it’s neutralized by the up to 50 percent gain in search productivity. :stuck_out_tongue: What is this word “dialup”? :\

The phrase “ducking for cover” makes me believe you were influenced by England’s unfortunate 1st innings score in the 4th Test Match. You could be an Aussie supporter. OMG

Just because we have “infinite bandwidth” doesn’t mean we have to use it
all.

Well, someone’s gotta answer the question that was asked. <shrug> I
didn’t see you jumping in to give an opinion, you just jumped into give
an opinion about people giving an opinion.

I don’t have to, I’ve been participating in it.

That’s kind the point I was trying to make initially. That and pointing
out that the effort to implement something like that - if it’s custom,
and assuming it is - needs to have some tangible payback in order to make
it worth the investment. I know that if I’m the one working on
implementing something, if there’s no good ROI story, I’m likely to not
do the work.

Result of this discussion has been twofold, I think - first that there
are options (such as tagging) that answer the question of marking threads
as solved without modifying the software, and second that since that can
be done, it doesn’t make searching more complicated, but less. Maybe
that was obvious to you; it wasn’t to me. So I’ve learned a thing.

I just realized that you may have coined a new collective: a lump of NNTP users. It has a ring to it, like a flock of birds.
