MariaDB, -the first time..

I was very surprised when I did a “zypper up” (not dup) on my main De (openSUSE 13.2 64 and KDE) in the afternoon.

I have installed mysql workbench, a lot of odbc and jdbc drivers to get Libreoffice base to work and connect/pick up information from remote various db. I have done some test to connect to a remote(LAN) mysqldb for Digikam. Been using db on local disk for digikam, -sqlklite.

Never have installed mysql/mariadb on my main DE.

Now I when i got back to my monitor it…

Message from package mariadb:

You just installed MySQL server for the first time.

You can start it using:
 rcmysql start

During first start empty database will be created for your automatically.

PLEASE REMEMBER TO SET A PASSWORD FOR THE MariaDB root USER !
To do so, start the server, then issue the following commands:

'/usr/bin/mysqladmin' -u root password 'new-password'
'/usr/bin/mysqladmin' -u root -h misibook password 'new-password'

Alternatively you can run:
'/usr/bin/mysql_secure_installation'

which will also give you the option of removing the test
databases and anonymous user created by default. This is
strongly recommended for production servers.

Have I manage to mess things up again? In that case. Mea culpa.

Probably not.

MySQL/MariaDB is required by Akonadi, so it’s normal that you would have it installed.

AFAICS, the mariadb package checks whether /var/lib/mysql/mysql exists, i.e. whether mariadb/mysql has been started at least once already, and prints that message if not.

You probably installed an update to mariadb (there was one recently), and as you never ran it as server, you got the message.
You should probably file a bug report, this should not happen every time you install an update I’d say.

Thanks wolfie323 for the answer, I got it. I even got more educated after caprus tread ( and your patience). I guess that is one of the reasons openSUSE forum is very often mentioned in connection to the benefits of using openSUSE :).
