Mapping buttons 8 & 9 as back & forward in Dolphin

Is there a way to tell Dolphin that my back and forward buttons (identified by xev as buttons 8 and 9, respectively) will actually move back and forward through my folder history?

I’ve tried configuring Dolphin’s shortcuts but when I go to customise each option, then click the appropriate button, it’s as if it just doesn’t understand mouse clicks as something it will accept to redefine a shortcut.

It’s now three days since I switched from Mandriva 2009 to openSUSE 11.1 for its excellent KDE4 support, but not having back and forward button support is driving me nuts. That’s one thing that Mandriva seems to have got right (and I didn’t do anything to tell it to do that, either). Pity their KDE4 support otherwise is lacking.

I’d be very interested in knowing how to do this as well… I had it working once with some gnome utility pretty much converting the mouse buttons to alt arrow left / alt arrow right.

Cost me a ton of time and I didn’t take any notes so I can’t even remember the programs name now. It really is a shame the buttons are useless anywhere besides Firefox (and I think they’re only working in Firefox since 10.3 or 11.0)
