I am experiencing a strange issue with Device Notifier in Suse 42.2.
If I plug in a USB thumb-drive and select OPEN WITH FILE MANAGER, I get a pop-up
that says Malformed URL. If I try to select the device again, I get the message
“You are not authorized to mount this device”.
When this error occurs, the device IS mounted at /run/media/…
This seems to happen at random. Sometimes, the device will mount OK.
I have also seen this happen on several different machines and various thumb-drives,
so I don’t think it is hardware specific.
Any idea as to why this is happening and how to fix it?
I haven’t experienced this behaviour myself, but I don’t have a need to attach USB media much lately. Which desktop environment? Is the install fully-updated?
FWIW, I did find a Fedora thread reporting the same issue, (so perhaps a problem upstream that slipped through).

Different distros/versions? Different desktop environments? More info might be useful here.
You might need to submit a bug report for this. Some suggestions to get output related to the USB device being detected…
From a terminal, monitor udev ahead of the USB storage device being plugged in
All the machines that this failure occurs in are running Suse 42.2/KDE/Plasma 5. All the same Distro, all the same desktop. One machine is a Laptop, The others are Desk machines.
The machines are updated at LEAST once a week, if not more often. The machine that this failure showed up on today (the Laptop) was updated this morning.
As I indicated, this does NOT happen all the time.
I’ve had this issue since I installed 42.2 on these machines a few months ago. Prior to that, they were running 13.2 (without incident). All machines had a clean install.
I suspect that this is more of a KDE/Plasma issue, than a kernel problem. As I indicated, the drive IS mounted. I can point Dolphin to the /run/media directory
for access to the drive. The pop-up error prevents the “open with file manager” (Dolphin) from executing automatically.
I don’t see any error indication in the output of dmesg --follow and *udevadm monitor. *The messages only indicate that the drive was detected and mounted.
Yes, it does appear to be a Plasma-related issue. I can really only suggest submitting a bug report here. (It would be interesting to know whether this has been resolved in a later KDE Plasma 5 version - I don’t have time to check/research currently.)
