This should be simple. I copied the 13.1 isos to a thumb drive. Bot 32 bit
and 64 bit flavors worked as boot devices - both conventional and UEFI
machines would boot with the appropriate image. Now, I want to use those
devices for other things but they will not mount and both fdisk and
parted/gparted fail when trying to create usable partitions.
What do I need to do to make them visible (and usable) to a 13.1 system,
preferably rerstoring the original fat32 format and partitions?

This is explained on the wiki.
Just go to the download page, then search for the help page, look about
for the instructions for creating a usb stick, then look further, there
is a section on recovery the stick for normal usage after install.

Figured it was something simple but never thought to zero out the MBR area -
that’s almost too simple! Gotta get my copy of dfsee updated to handle this
case - the old version refuses to write because of the type flag which does,
in fact, identify the media as read-only.

Clear as mud. From https://en.opensuse.org/Portal:Wiki clicking on download
leaves the wiki. Where exactly on the wiki do you mean for those USB stick
instructions to be found?

words are persuasive.

Yes, that’s the issue. Utils think it is a CD or DVD, so that it can not
be modified at all…

Sigh.
You want me to spend my limited internet quota to find it out for you?
There is a paragraph and link that reads: “More information on creating
a bootable USB stick” – that is, “look about for the instructions for
creating a usb stick”, as I said.
Without your use of “the wiki”, I would have found it too. By referring to
“the wiki”, you made me think there was something else I was missing, causing
me to expressly not consider any pages that did not include the string
“wiki”. Don’t forget, posting here is by both web interface and news
interface. I only use the latter, which has no links other than what anyone
includes in composition or quote.

No… but it is the wiki, nevertheless.
It is a wiki page, and I explained how to find it.

Same as I do, and same as Will does, as you could find out very easily
That’s beside the point. You called it “the wiki”, as opposed to a page’s
title, a page whose URI does does not include the string “wiki”. That’s
nebulous, easy to misinterpret, mislead a Googler into thinking
<lang>.opensuse.org and “the wiki” are something different.

Not really - I fiddle-farted around on the wiki for a while then gave up on
it. It was simpler to reboot to Win8 and let it mess with it, but once you
jogged my memory with zeroing the MBR I remembered having occasion to resort
to that on some other drives years back.
