Hi, all!
I’ve my work’s notebook (with UEFI).
I installed openSuse Leap 42.1, and after a little work with some drivers, all is working very well.
Now, my boss want to install Windows 10 on a partition that I left free.
I know, when I install Windows after Linux, Grub stop working.
Is there any simple way in order to Grub start working again for dual boot?
Or,
Is there any way to install only Grub?
Or maybe,
Is there any way to boot openSuse (after Windows 10 installation), in order to reconfigure Grub?
(I want to know the process before to install Windows 10.)
Well it should not be a problem if you use EFI boot. Windows should just be added to the EFI boot partition. Problem is Windows may decide to erase the EFI boot leaving openSUSE out in the cold. I suggest you backup the directories and files in the EFI boot to an external device just in case Windows decides to be nasty
Thank you, for reply.
I understood.
But just in case Windows erase the EFI boot,… Is there any way to install Grub again?
(Its just curiosity… I have a PC with BIOS - no EFI -, running openSuse 13.2.)
Back up current contents of the partition as files so you can copy back. no reinstall should be need unless the the settings in the UEFI flash are messed with. Be sure you have a live repair disk and you can correct any changes if need be
This is not like a MBR boot it is totally different
Problem is that you never know what a Windows install will do. If they follow the correct UEFI rules it should be fine but they can throw a monkey wrench since they simply don’t care if they follow standards
If it does happen, check whether there is still a directory “\EFI\opensuse” in the EFI partition. The chances are that it will still be there. And, if it is still there, you should be able to run “efibootmgr” to add an entry for opensuse. Use google for examples.
To do this, you have to boot your rescue media to UEFI mode – otherwise “efibootmgr” won’t work.
If the EFI partition has been reformatted, you could go to full rescue mode and run
