Major Problems with 11.0

I’m having problems with Opensuse 11.0. I installed rc1 some time ago and didn’t like it so I formatted the partition and waited for a final release. Several days ago I burned a copy of the iso included from the cover disc with PCuser oct issue. I installed this and to my surprise when the install finished and rebooted it was setup the same way I had left up the messed up rc1 version. (before I reformatted the partition containing rc1, I played around changing default fonts, colours, button positions and several other things).
Now after three formats and reinstalls it is still the same. I’ve tried setting things to defaults in the configure desktop setup which worked to an extent. My main problems now are, 1. I have no visible buttons on any applications or windows I open, 2. I can’t resize windows because once you select to resize the application locks in resize mode forcing a hard reboot ( pressing the powerbutton) control alt backspace, control alt delete doesn’t work. 3. Turning off all effects doesn’t work, they just don’t turn off. 4. I have 10.3 and vista installed with 10.3 selected as default but when grub loads and boots the default system vista loads. I can no longer boot 10.3.
If I can’t get 11.0 working I would at least like to be able to continue using 10.3.

Please help…

When you say your reformatted, did you only reformat / but not /home? ie Are you using the same /home/username directory? It could be there are bad config file settings in /home there that are simply being reapplied. … There is a (somewhat drastic) fixes for this (where this fix IS preferable to a re-install) but I am reluctant to recommend it as it is drastic (where the fix is to boot to run level 3 and rename your /home/username/.kde directory to some other name). I think for kde4 you will need to rename another directory (possibly rename .kde4 to some other directory). Note I say “rename” so that you can always boot to run level 3 and rename back if need be.

Yes I am using the same /home dir. If I rename /.kde4 will I not loose all kde4 config? As I am at present unable to log into 10.3 (which uses the same home dir) what is likely to happen without a .kde4 config?

Yes, if you rename .kde4 you will lose all kde4 config and have to start again with a clean default config.

Lets say you boot to run level 3 and rename kde4 to kde4-veryold

Then you either reboot or type “startx” from run level 3. You should be presented with a brand new default config on your desktop that needs tuning to what you like. BUT it will hopefully also have discarded the issues that are causing you problems.

If you do not like that (having tried it) you simply reboot to run level 3, and replace the newly created .kde4 with your renamed (ie backed up) kde4-veryold and you are back to where you are now. So nothing is lost … at worst case a failed attempt …

In the case of 10.3, you may also have to rename .kde to .kde-old

Thankyou oldcpu,
went into runlevel 3, renamed the file, startx. Now I’m a happy camper, till I muck the next thing up.

now all I need to do is sort out grub…

I luv the way linux works…
