The providers of KDE3 for opensuse have done me dirty. In the update from
OS 11.4 to 12.1 they dropped the proper KDE3 ‘kmail’ email client and
substituted the known to be problematic KDE4 version. Now my email is
completely borked. It seems to have taken that fragile and flaky akonadi
with it. Plus it says my mysql is broken as well.
12.1 is no longer supported has not been for some time.
KDE3 id not dead but it is dieing. Sorry about that. When only a very few people are still using it it will slowly go away from lack of support.
The trouble here is that you are using a openSUSE version that no longer has an active repository. So finding older packages become a big problem. Also kmail has become something of a monster and did not work well for some time but AFAIK it works fine now. And you can still run KDE3 under 13.2.
In order to provide any given piece of software someone has to support it ( ie compile/package it for openSUSE). openSUSE is a community based distro most of the none system stuff is done by volunteers. KDE3 is not really officially supported by the organization (they have moved on to the next step KDE4 and soon plasma5) but it is available. With KDE3 there is still a small group dedicated to keeping it alive but it is small and growing smaller over time.
Maybe you need to volunteer. If you can’t program you can test or help in docs/translations etc
But in any case with 12.1 you are not going to get any updates current version is 13.2

Well, i guess i will have to build it myself. OBS will come in handy.
The next issue is where do i get the sources for KDE3 kmail? Or KDE3 as a
whole including KDE3 kmail?
