mail backup

hello,

I’d like to know if there is a way to backup mail folders, as they are.
I already tried trough the “file” menu saving function, but it seems to be available for single messages, otherwise it saves more selected messages as unique file.
I’d like to manage mails directly on backup support, one by one if I need…
Thanks

What application do you use for Mail?

I use Evolution.

Backup the folder /home/YOURUSERNAME/.evolution

Error copying «et-expanded-mbox:home_user.evolution_mail_local_Inbox_Folder_subfolder».

More details: File not valid.

Copy paste the exact command line you used to do that, and the exact result, between

brackets. If you used a GUI, which, and write the exact procedure, in detail, and results.

I used Gnome.
Simply I copy/pasted the .evolution folder on USB pendrive.
Near the end of the copying process I get the error message.

Try this.

Rename the folder to evolution-backup, removing the dot

Now try copying this folder to wherever you want the backup
If that works, then rename it back to .evolution

It doesn’t work…

I assume you used Nautilus to do the copy? Use some other program – for example, mc.
Make sure Evolution is closed.

Nautilus!!!..

…click right menu and copy folder…

Hi
I’ve found it’s easier to use the command line to do this sort of thing;

/bin/tar cjf evolution_`date +\%m%d%y%H%M%S`.tar.bz2 .evolution/*

/That/ in Gnome means using Nautilus. I insist, use mc. I have the suspicion that nautilus is trying
to be clever somehow, detecting mail folders or something.

where can I select mc from?

I would use this method as well. Don’t be afraid of the shell, it can help you a lot.

well, what would be the exact command?

Sorry, I’m not able to use the shell…
Could you please provide me the exact command to type in?

Thanks

LOL

Just type

mc

Note if that does not work go to Yast-Software Management and install it.

Open a terminal (xterm, konsole, gnome-terminal, whatever) and type ‘mc’.
