I’ve been trying to get multiple monitors going on my laptop (thru the HDMI port) and did fairly well, but the ribbon/panel/whatever (at the bottom of the screen with launcher, etc.) is now gone and I can’t find it (even with zoom-out). At first it was only gone when I disconnected the external monitor, but was present when both monitors were attached. Now it’s always gone. Is there a magic reset-the-desktop to default (without reinstall) command? THANKS!!! Patti

Why don’t you simply add a new panel? Rightclick on desktop (→ unlock widgets if necessary) → add panel.
I suppose you accidentally removed it. I recommend to keep widgets locked to avoid such accidents.
gropiuskalle is right, you should consider keeping your widgets locked. You do not have to be a novice to remove a task bar item (or the whole thing) by mistake, it can happen to anyone.
Thanks!!! Ya, I was able to finally get it back. The problem was that I added the extra HDMI monitor, the panel moved over there (even though it’s supposed to be the second monitor). I moved it back to the primary monitor, but then when the second monitor was removed, the panel disappeared. Also, some dialog/application boxes would appear on one monitor and some on the other - so when only one monitor was attached, I only got some of the dialog/application boxes. Then it got even weirder as compositing didn’t redraw the items within windows properly unless I resized them. I guess HDMI still has some issues :\ or else it’s a buggy ATI driver.
I have a lappy with an ATI card. The laptop screen is seen as LVDS. I also have an HDMI large screen attached and it’s seen as HDMI-0. I configure them at boot time with a script that I autorun at boot time. It might interest you, you might be able to modify it to suit your situation. I wanted the laptop screen on the right and the HDMI screen on the left with the bottoms of the screens aligned (rather than the tops). Here’s the detail of my voyage: My dual monitor settings won’t stick
I was remotely helping my 84+ year old mother sort some things on her openSUSE-11.3 KDE4 desktop using vnc, as she is in Canada and I live in Europe. I unlocked her widgets to change some icon locations, and within a second she commented on Skype to me, DON’T FORGET TO LOCK’EM AFTER, and she kept reminding me every 10 seconds !
I was smiling the entire time while working on her desktop, that she had already picked up on the lesson (about locking widgets in KDE4) and taking serious note of that lesson. She has only been using KDE4 since early November this year.
