madwifi / How to install snapshot madwifi-hal-

after installing openSUSE 11 on my laptop “SAMSUNG R60 plus”, after installing madwifi for openSUSE 11 via YaST2 and after blacklisting ath5k the “dmesg”-command delivers following information concerning the Atheros Chipset:

dmesg | egrep ‘ath|wifi|hal’

ath_hal: module license ‘Proprietary’ taints kernel.
ath_hal: (AR5210, AR5211, AR5212, RF5111, RF5112, RF2413, RF5413)
ath_pci: 0.9.4
wifi%d: unable to attach hardware: ‘Hardware revision not supported’ (HAL status 13)

The command “lspci” gives the following information:

02:00.0 Ethernet controller: Atheros Communications Inc. AR242x 802.11abg Wireless PCI Express Adapter (rev 01)

The commands “iwconfig” and “ifconfig” show no wireless extensions.

Page HCL/Network Adapters (Wireless - openSUSE gives the following information concerning chipsets

Chipset Type Bus Driver
Atheros AR242x 802.11abg PCI/Cardbus madwifi

ok You will need to install madwifi hal (>, check
with modinfo ath_hal), and then blacklist ath5k. Reboot,
and it should work.

On page special snapshots I found the file madwifi-hal- but without the help of YaST2 I do not know how to install software and need assistance. Can you please tell me, how to install the snapshot madwifi-hal- on an “openSUSE 11” distribution?

Thank you in advance for your help.

Kind regards.

you have to uncompress it then compile it to install from a tar.gz file. have a look at my own reminder for installing similar files. It may not be the best, but, for some, especially me it worked. my reminder

Hello Andy,

after installing the software madwifi-kmp-pae-r3698+AR5007EG_2.6.25.5_1.rm.0.i586.rpm on my computer the atheros chipset is detected. Thank you for your advice to install an rpm-package. Now I can create a wlan-connection and the connection is very stable. The procedure to open the wlan-connection is a little bit “strange”. To solve this problem I will open another thread if I do not “google” a wellknown solution before.

Kind regards.
