  • If you haven’t since installing, fully update your system at least once and possibly regularly with the following command in a root console, it ensures your system has the latest fixes and enhancements plus ensures internal consistency. This is particularly important for Intel HD systems with integrated graphics since Intel display firmware and graphics are distributed through kernel updates.
zypper up
  • Decide what you like and want in your Desktop. If you want everything automated for you, and fancy visual effects, there’s a price to be paid no matter how many resources your system has. KDE (and Gnome) is nice, but there’s plenty of things that are always running that you may not notice. openSUSE “flavors” its lighter Desktops LXDE and XFCE to still provide a similar User experience as the busier Desktops, like KDE and Gnome respectively.

  • Is that 1TB disk, a HDD? Of course, replacing a rotating HDD with a solid state SDD can be a big improvement and it’s far more possible economically today than a year ago. Unless you’re filling up that drive more than 50% with files and apps, keep on top of your BTRFS snapshots, and manually delete unnecessary snapshots if necessary.

  • If you’re using your machine in an unconventional way… like doing bittorrent which places a very heavy demand on your networking, you may want to tune your machine for that kind of use. Although written a long time ago, you can tune your networking resources and TCP/IP Congestion Control algorithm following what I wrote (Full explanation and how to modify is described in detail)
    https://sites.google.com/site/4techsecrets/optimize-and-fix-your-network-connection

  • You can also take a look at the Tuning guide in the openSUSE docs

Hi
Install my mbpfan package, I run it on a MacBook3,1 (late 2007) system (4GB RAM, 128GB SSD, Intel GPU);

http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/malcolmlewis:/openSUSE_General/openSUSE_Leap_42.1/x86_64/mbpfan-1.9.1-2.1.x86_64.rpm

I set minimum to 2600RPM in /etc/mbpfan.conf file then restart the systemd service and check status and run sensors command to check.

I will move this thread to install/boot/login as it’s a help question :wink:

Hi
Moved and re-opened.

Hi tsu2 , yes the system is up to date , i always make sure it is .
now the 1 TB is HDD and i know the advantages of being SDD but i can;t effored the cost right now , especially the hurtiz of my screen is not doing well , so i might manage to use this machine for a while now till i can effored to buy a better one , btw away from apple waht could you advice as good hardware cheap price ?
the truth that there are much more lighter desktops i agree with , i just was comparing the old system i had which was centos and the newer one now , centos was faster …
btw waht dose the HTH above your name mean ?

Hi
You mean the frequency (Hertz)? Sounds like you might have Nvidia
graphics in this system? If it is overheating, sounds like you might
need to find someone who can dismantle and re-do the heatsink compound
on CPU and GPU…

Hi ,
yes i meant that but what i have id BuiltIn Intel Graphics , the dpi ,pixels seems to be big here ,makes my eyes feel deezy sometimes i wish i knew how to figure that out . the screen in general is not doing well it got a littel small white spot since i managed to hit the laptop when it was in my hand back when i was coming back from the uni last semester ,however this machinehas been around since 2011 the future retirement plan for it to be somewhere near to my old books shelf, only when i get the money to buy a better one .
btw , i do not know how good you are with hardware , but what would be your choice for good hardware cheap as price ,offcourse away from apple .lol.

Hi
This MacBook is from 2007 and still going strong (now running Tumbleweed) :wink: I upgraded the RAM to 4GB and it’s running a 120GB SSD…

I use libfreetype6 from the Namtrac repo;

zypper ar -f http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/namtrac:/subpixel/openSUSE_Leap_42.1/ Subpixel
zypper ref
zypper install libfreetype6-2.6.3-164.1.x86_64

Have a look at post 4, image 4 here Anyone using namtrac repo? - Open Chat - openSUSE Forums

Then fire up YaST -> System -> Fonts and duplicate, that should help improve things…

Hi
There is also the option to switch back to sna if it’s on uxa with the
intel driver by adding a file called /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf;

Section "Device"
Identifier  "Intel Graphics"
Driver      "intel"
Option      "AccelMethod" "sna"
Option      "TearFree"    "true"
EndSection

You can what it’s currently at via;

cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep -ie uxa -ie sna

Also try with/without the tear free option.

Hi
The files in the directory are processed in alpha numeric order, so it
needs to be set before it hits the 50… files as it uses settings from
those files as well, the driver one needs to be configured first, hence
the 20…

In the desktop settings -> hardware -> color you can configure, change
the profile etc.

For all the settings there is a manual page, open a terminal and type;

man 4 intel

Hi , Thank you :slight_smile:
Now Trying to add the resolution of 1360x768_60 instead of the current one 1280x800_60
i been trying to edit the 20-intel file or create new 12-monitor file or modify 50-monitor file with no luck :frowning:
went adding the xrandr way

xrandr -q >LVDS1 and all otehres discounnected so i kept going with LVDS1

cvt

newmode

addmode > i get error with this step that the mode could not be found

could you help adding that resolution please ?

Hi
On the Gnome desktop, just use the Settings -> Displays to configure the resolution?

http://thumbnails115.imagebam.com/48013/d8a751480125229.jpg](ImageBam)

Hi , right but the wanted resolution is not listed there

Hi
AFAIK, if it’s not in the xrandr output then I doubt you can get the resolution…

I guise you are right , i just installed tumpleweed but the left command key is not working , or its functioning as ALT key ,do you have solution for that ?

Hi
On mine left command key is the “Super” key.

Desktop environment settings should be able to tweak the keyboard keys.

Hi ,
i could not find that option , and am using GNOME Desktop ,the system recognize the left command key as alt key , i know it suppose to be SUPER key , any idea ?

Hi
Under Settings-> keyboard-> shortcuts do you see the Super (AKA
Windows, or command key on a Mac)key defined in there?

In a terminal as root user, what do you see when you run;

hwinfo --keyboard
