Mac drivers on Linux?

Hello,

I just purchased a Canon laser printer that said on the box it works with Linux. After talking with two technical support people and a manager, it turns out that no Linux driver exists!

I have a CD with Windows and Mac drivers - is it possible to use the Mac driver since Mac OS is unix-like? Thanks.

What canon printer is it?

It is a mf4350d (black-and-white printer, copier, fax, scanner). I have openSUSE 11.1.

No, OS/X is based on FreeBSD. The Unix/Linux similarity is only at the Unix API, not at the binary level. Even FreeBSD drivers may not work as-is on OS/X, because Apple could and are able to change the innards without having to release the source, due to the BSD license.

this page confirms no linux drivers

Canon

I would suspect Canon use their CAPT system for printing in your MFD; you may wish to gooogle on that;

we have an LBP printer; using the CAPT driver; works perfectly;

Canon

the software for a MFD has both printer and scanner functions

OpenPrinting database - All Canon Printers
I don’t see MF 4350d listed there. You may try with a closest model.

I think syampillai has come up with a very good suggestion here;

Canon

this Linux Printer Driver (UFR II) Ver.1.80E

seems generic for the 41XX and 42XX series;

you could reasonably install it and see;

I note canon says

This UFR II/UFR II LT printer driver provides printing functions for Canon LBP printers operating under the CUPS (Common UNIX Printing System) environment, a printing system that operates on Linux operating systems.

so it is LBP

Canon also say

This Driver requires installation of Ghostscript including common API. Before installing this driver, make sure that Ghostscript including common API is installed. Acquiring method of Ghostscript including common API varies in accordance with the kind of distribution.

the file is compressed;

UFR_II_Printer_Driver_for_Linux_Src_V180_uk_EN.tar.gz

it is .tar.gz

Cannon sucks with linux, them and Lexmark…
I would trade it in for a HP

Lexmark laser printers are fine. It’s their ink-jets that suck. They almost give them away, and charge a motza for the ink.

Thank you everyone for your suggestions. I will try them after work today and post some feedback.

Well, after 4 years of loyalty to Linux, I am now a Mac user. Sorry to the Linux community, but at least I didn’t go to Windows!

I use a MacBook Pro and the hardware is excellent. But, I run openSUSE on it :wink:
