M7 NVIDIA drivers

The kernel-headers seem not to match the kernel version, so it is impossible to install the nvidia drivers.

Has anyone else also problems with installing the drivers?

Out of curiosity, does anybody know when the nvidia drivers for kernel
2.6.31 (opensuse 11.2) are planned to be available in the repos?

Roadmap - openSUSE

Search for the date when the final of 11.2 will be released and add perhaps one or two weeks for safety.

How do you know?

I can’t believe it could be 2 weeks after release. Why would Novell
want to release opensuse when it doesn’t yet work out of the box for
approximately half of the users?

Lots of forum postings and reviews would ensue, saying something like
“for some inexplicable reason, opensuse doesn’t support the most
widespread graphics hardware, requiring tedious manual work only
suitable for advanced linux users”.

Nah, they had the repos ready for release in 11.1 also, didn’t they?

The version of the kernel-headers don’t need to match the kernel exactly. You must have another problem.

Could you execute this command in a terminal?

rpm -qa | grep kernel

And post the output.

I installed M7 using the DVD and installing the nvidia driver worked - although it did crash the system initially!

I upgraded from M6 to M7 last night and had no problems in recompiling the 185.18.31 driver (which I’ve been using for a while now).

I don’t “know” (the only ones who know are the maintainers of the nvidia repo) it’s just experience.

How long did it take for the ATI drivers to be in the repos after release of 11.1?

(IIRC it was even a little longer than two weeks)

You know that the NVidia driver repo is not
supplied by Novell but by NVidia.

Note that I wrote “to be safe”, if a third party repository is available directly at release day, fine, but don’t count on it, especially for repos with prorietary packages.

Fine, can you ensure as that they will also do this for 11.2?

No, you can’t because it’s not the distributor who makes this decision.

It is maybe likely, but not guaranteed.

Novell and the two “big” graphics card vendors work together on this issue, as the example for ATI and 11.1 shows, it’s still ATI/NVidia who are in charge and not Novell/openSUSE.

Hi Akoellh,

you’re right. So then let’s just hope that Novell had coordinated their
release dates with both ATI and Nvidia, or better let’s hope that ATI
and Nvidia were so friendly to commit themselves to a certain date for
releasing their drivers for kernel 2.6.31.

P.S.

No need to believe in that, it was done with 11.1 and the “missing” ATI repos (as you said “half of the users”, so this would be the approximate “other half”).

And it still worked out of the box for most users but without 3D support for those ATI cards requiring fglrx for that.

It (3D acceleration) does also not work “out of the box” with any card that needs drivers from an external repository (No matter if NVidia ort ATI), you still have to explicitly enable those repos and install the respective drivers, they are not enabled by default (reason should be obvious).

The main point on the question “When will the drivers be available in the repos for 11.2” is the first part of my answer.

They will not be available for any “pre” version, never were and probably never will be for those two “third party repos”, which is also somehow understandable, as they (ATI/NVidia) would have to keep up with the very frequent changes on an operating system (i.e practically weekly kernel updates during development, which may require complete rebuilding of all packages) which is marked as “testing and not for production use” (with a quite small base of users, at least during the development cycle).

I forgot to install kernel-syms… :shame:

M7 is now working really great for me.
The boot times are very nice compared to 11.1:
M7 Live from USB ~40s
11.1 from RAID0 ~50s

I think a installed 11.2 could reach boot times around 10 - 20s on my system, I can’t wait to test it in November.
