M 4

Any news yet?

Will it being released on the original target date or delayed in view of the delay that affected M 3?

Hi
Next week according to the factory Mailing list this morning (Not archived yet).

Hi,

Normally I would upload Milestone4 to the mirrors around now, but
unfortunately my own experience in using Factory right now forbids this.

There are too many regressions in there atm - I don’t even have network
(possibly already fixed in git.kernel.org - linux/kernel/git/davem/net-next-2.6.git/commitdiff)

So I would like to have them fixed first and then release early next week.

Greetings, Stephan

Thanks Malcolm.

I’ve just run an update on my system and my sysinfo now tells me I have M4. I have it with KDE4.6beta1 on a spare partition and from about M2 it’s been running well and pretty stable.

that is good enough for me - i’ll do an update tonight

I also have m4 on my factory but networkmanager is broken. using traditional networking with ifup works tho

I just finished updating factory this am. NetworkManager is working again and kde is now 4.6 beta1. Looking good

Apart from Kontact - crashes on start-up.

I see that kernel-xen-devel is still not available for the 2.6.37 kernel. Can one still build the nvidia drivers without it?

Also Akonadi isn’t working either. Allegedly due to Nepomuk not running

  • which is untrue.

@pilotgi
You should be able to build an nvidia module without kernel-xen-devel. As long as you have gcc, make, kernel-source and kernel-syms" installed.

If anything goes wrong you can always uninstall using “NVIDIA*.run --uninstall” (without the quotes).
The worst that can happen is that it won’t compile but I don’t think this will happen.

Remember to have a lot of fun!

I don’t think Milestone 4 is released yet. Read the post by ‘malcomelewis’.

What you people have got is a KDE update, it seems. I don’t subscribe to ‘factory’ KDE repos for 11.4. I’ve checked “http://download.opensuse.org/distribution”. I see only /11.4-Milestone3/. Maybe, I don’t have properly-configured repos?

Thats the correct place for 11.4 M4 when it is officially released. Others are likely speculating that one of the factory builds has been ‘designated’ as the issued 11.4, but that may not be the case.

If you look here: Index of /factory/iso you will see as of the time in which I type this, for the Gnome LiveCD and KDE LiveCD, build 0901 is the current factory snapshot release (as of 23-Nov-2010). Any build after that is an openSUSE-NET ISO snapshot release. However that does not definitely state that build 0901 (or 0908) is the released M4.

Hi
You can also check the QA of the builds here;

I was looking for something more like,

“I have built the nvidia drivers with the 2.6.37 kernel without kernel-xen-devel updated and it worked fine.”

Maybe it’s no longer an issue with Milestone 3, but with M2, I couldn’t start KDE unless the nvidia drivers were installed.

M3 is better. The KDE install works.

When installing with KDE with an FX5200 nvidia driver (which does not work well with the nouveau driver) with the nomodeset boot code, at the end of the install one gets some sort of fall-back error wrt KMS on the 1st boot ( ? or something like that, my memory is fuzzy) and then the nv graphic driver works. … works more or less … (default resolution is poor).

After an update yesterday, I was told to reboot. On reboot, GRUB menu
says I’m on M4. Swings and roundabouts with this I suppose as GRUB
didn’t register a change from M2 to M3 until about a week after the
official release (not the original release date - the actual one).

Actually it is working - after a fashion. Although Kontact failed to
start, Akonadi keeps pestering me for passwords for mail logins.

Found this problem seems to be associated with converting kmail data
from KDE 4.4 to 4.6.

This seems to have been fixed upstream yesterday. Packages are updated in:
…/repositories/KDE:/Distro:/Factory/openSUSE_Factory

I just updated the kontact/kmail/kdepim etc packages with a build no of -261.2 e.g. kaddressbook-4.5.80-261.2.x86_64.rpm
and it seems to be working OK now.

Strange. I’m pretty sure I updated to this version but it still failed.
Perhaps I’ll have to scrub the kmail2rc file and try again. I’m on my 11.2
partition at the moment getting my mail sorted so will try 11.4 again later.
(Firefox 4 keeps crashing on 11.3 so that’s out)

Thanks.
