LXDE, lxpanel

I am using this howto to build a minimalist openSUSE 11.1 system. But rather than GNOME, I wanted to use LXDE. But then I went and read this thread and this thread and I got scared off. They strongly suggest that the LXDE panel is really unstable in 11.1 and if I want a stable version, I will have to compile it myself. I am new enough to linux that I have never compiled anything from source and I don’t think a new distro is the place to start.

Any suggestions? For example, an independent panel with minimal dependencies to replace the LXDE panel? By preference, I would like packages I can install with either zypper or yast2, because I am very new to openSUSE.

Or should I just use Debian Lenny netinstall to build a minimalist distro with LXDE?

It works on my laptop.

As long as you stay away from the svn version, you should be fine. I’ve been experimenting with LXDE for a short while and have found it quite snappy in 11.1.

You might also want to install the extras for Openbox such as obconf, etc. from X11:windowmanagers repository in the build service

I am using SuSE 11.1 on a 64bit system. I would love to get LXDE working, but am having some probems. It looks like the problem is the Panel. It loads and freezes immediately. Once or twice I was able to get it to work for one selection, then it would freeze. Right mouse clicking on the desktop to bring up applications only lists the filemanager, a terminal and one other app I can’t remember right now.

Another minor thing is that I am running dual screens but the desktop is wrong. The screen is stretched, but both are showing only the left screen. When I logout the right screen (with the logo) is visible for a second, just before it closes LXDE.

I would like to get this working. I looks like a great gui. I can’t program, but I can provide data if it helps. You will need to tell me what you need. I haven’t installed the debug apps yet, but can if needed.

The other question is should I uninstall the 64 bit and just drop back to the i586 version? Would that help? Would that even work? I have had to do that with another app that wouldn’t run correctly. I would prefer to stay at 64 and get this running if possible

From my understanding, that was part of the reason that LXDE made it’s components fairly modular. You may want to try a different panel.

I’m not aware of any lightweight alternatives besides bmpanel. Have you tried adding another panel to your LXDE desktop? Or clearing out your panel settings?
