LTSP client issue

I have been using the KIWI LTSP system up to openSUSE Release 12.2 routinely with diskless thin clients and very rarely with fat clients (workstations botted via PXE).

After the upgrade to 12.3 all fat clients (both x64 and x86 CPUs) work as before - no problems.
-> So the LTSP server settings and network stuff are OK.

Both thin clients are identical and start their boot process flawlessly. I get a console through Ctrl-Alt-F2 where I can login locally on the thin client.
-> So all the thin client’s network hardware is OK.

However both thin clients only boot up before the login screen - the green progress bar at the bottom becomes coloured and then it stops - no Xserver, no login screen.

Beside the LTSP I can boot the thin clients from a USB flashdrive cleanly to a graphical environment (e.g. SystemRescueCD). This live system on the thin client needs considerably more resources
-> So the client’s hardware must be sufficient.

All LTSP clients (fat and thin) have the same settings on the server - namely no client specific sections in lts.conf.
I also tried to specify “XSERVER = via” in lts.conf but no difference.

The client’s hardware:
RAM: 512 MB
CPU: VIA C3 1GHz
Chipset: VIA Apollo
VGA: VIA Apollo VT8623 (max. 1600x1200)
LAN: Via VT6102 Rhine-II

Since the LTSP system should have “almost no” hardware requirements on the client side I can not see any ill point.
Does anyone experience something similar? Can anyone suggest where and how can I search for the cause?

thanks to everybody

Nothing of significance reported in /var/log/messages that may yield clues?

I examined the logfiles but - with my limited optics - can not identify any clues.
The contents of /var/log/messages are attached bellow. They are clipped to some core parts and the tail due to the length limitation of reply.

Here is the successful fat client:

Hi

I’m not too familiar with LTSP in a hardware config - only tested in VMWARE.

But you could try to set X_mode_0 to X_Mode_2 with different graphical resolutions (like 800x600, 1024x768, 1600x1200).

In my setup sometimes for no obvious reason I have to use kiwi-ltsp-setup -c from time to time in order get get through to the login and/or to booting through to the desktop.

Additionally you might try another xserver

That is all I can think off…

Kind regards,
